Solid Duck Tales prologue

"Sport Goofy in Soccermania" is a 20-minute cartoon from 1987, so this one has its 30th anniversary this year. I must say I don't think I am familiar with any of the voice acting cast or crew here, so I will move on to the story. Scrooge accidentally gives a priceless trophy to the nephews and has to support a soccer team to get it back. Part of this soccer team is Goofy and actually he is not just great player here, but also a bit on the smart side, which is nothing too common really if you have seen him in other shorter cartoons. This one here has nothing at all in common really with these way older How-to...-cartoons starring Goofy, not just because of the fact that everybody is talking in here. Sadly, some of the voice acting parts were not really working I would say. Anyway, it was nonetheless nice to see a cartoon that is different than the many Disney cartoons, already because of Donald's and Mickey's absence. And it's just as nice to have Scrooge and the Beagle Boys for once. We here in Germany know them as "Panzerknacker", which means something along the lines of "safe crackers". Anyway, don't be misguided by the title as this is an ensemble piece really and Goofy is just at the very center of it for the last 2-3 minutes. Not enough to be mentioned in the title. I guess they did it because he is perhaps the most known from the gang and more likable than Scrooge for example. Overall, this was an enjoyable little film that serves as great preparation for the things to come back then, namely the really entertaining Duck Tales television show.

Good for adults (and kids!)

Warning: Spoilers
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS Huey, Duey, & Louie ask Uncle Scrooge McDuck to buy them a $1.49 trophy. He gives them an old one. The curator of Duckburg Museum sees it and says it's worth millions. The boys tell Scrooge if he wants it back, he'll have to sponsor their team = the Greenbacks. They all go to Sport Goofy's Sporting Store to get a soccer ball. Scrooge sees that Goofy's good at soccer and hires him to coach the team. The (crooked) Beagle Boys form their own team and cheat to try and win the trophy at the soccer tournament. The Beagle's kidnap Goofy on the big day but Goofy escapes and gets there by half-time with them losing 10 - 0. Goofy single-handedly ties the score up and then wins it - with 73,000 fans watching. Uncle Scrooge gets the Beagle Boys arrested. This was truly (as usual) a good Disney show.

Rated 8 out of 10.
