Sex & Nudity

  • A prostitute enters a hotel room and then removes her clothes while a man watches. They prepare to have intercourse but the man stops and they do not have sex. Her breasts and buttocks are exposed. His buttocks is partially exposed.
  • A prostitute is topless and a man begins to have sex with her. She removes her skirt and he touches her butt but is interrupted. He stops and doesn't do it. She gets changed and leaves.
  • Sexual content is very infrequent.
  • A woman is crying on a sofa beside a man. She is drunk and distraught. She asks the man to have sex with her, to which he agrees. Their sex scene is prolonged with both male and female nudity.
  • A man is seen performing oral sex on a woman, but the man performing the act is off-camera.

Violence & Gore

  • A mother slaps her young son several times while yelling at him, and then hits him causing him to fall down. He cries but he's not seriously injured.
  • Two men push each other and then one man is punched, knocking him down. As they begin to fight again they are separated.
  • Not much violence, but the moments are shocking and strong.
  • A man lets off a shotgun twice to scare two black children away.
  • Some scenes of family abuse.
  • A man shoots himself in front of two other men. Viewed from a distance and a little blood.
  • An electric chair execution scene which shows a prisoner strapped down and smoke coming off his body as he is electrocuted.

Profanity

  • 'Hell' is said.

  • Several scenes which involve some racist, sexual and profane dialogue.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Many people smoke and drink in a bar, and one man buys a pack of cigarettes.
  • Two people are shown smoking at the same time while in different locations. A woman drinks liquor from a small bottle and smokes a cigarette in front of her young son. A man smokes a cigarette while in a jail cell.
  • A man and woman drink liquor together in a home. They both become somewhat drunk.
  • A lot of smoking and drinking throughout, including background characters.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A woman becomes upset after a man says some very disgusting things to her.
  • Most of the film has a very sad and depressing tone.
  • A man fires a gun to scare off two children.
  • The ending can be somewhat emotionally intense.
  • Themes of family loss, depression, and racism.
  • Hank (the main character) says the N word to a black corrections officer and he also scared away 2 black boys by shooting a shotgun in the air.
  • An electric chair execution scene is shown; it is not very graphic but it is lengthy and is preceded by a long process of preparation for the execution.

  • Tyrell was hit by a car off-screen, but the beeping car was heard and lays unconscious on the ground as his mother Leticia cries. Some blood is visible and he is taken to a hospital. He dies.

  • Leticia cries out for realising her son is dead.
  • Sonny shoots himself.
  • Buck (Hank's father) racially insults Leticia.
  • Sonny holds a gun to Hank then shoots himself.
  • A child is yelled at and hit by his mother. Later he lays unconscious on the ground after being hit by a car.
