Do I need to say more?

Sonic & Knuckles is a great addition to Sonic 3. It has new levels, a new final boss, it introduced lock-on technology so you can play Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Knuckles in Sonic 2, it's awesome!

For those of you who remember the old Sonic games for Genesis, if you have played the Sonic and Knuckles game and added on Sonic 3, I enjoyed playing as Knuckles and playing different levels. It will bemissed by at least me.

A truly awesome game.

The fourth Sonic game is a big improvement over the last one in my opinion. This time around, you play as either Sonic or Knuckles (hence the title). The game offers good graphics, new levels and new bad guys, which is always nice. But, the most impressive thing about this game by far is that you can hook it up to Sonic 3. When you do that, you get to play as Knuckles throughout that whole game and find some interesting surprises. This is truly an excellent game. Thumbs up!

The best Sonic game ever made
AdrenalinDragon31 July 2006
This is hands down the best Sonic game ever made. Even Sonic Rush and the Sonic Advance games can't beat it. This is a Sonic game everyone must purchase, and with lock-on technology, you can have the complete Sonic 3!

This Sonic game also has the best Sonic zones ever. You've got the Lava Reef zone, which is a cave with lava filled obstacles, and the Death Egg zone, which is Robotnik's flying base. Finally, the Sandopolis zone, which is a zone in the desert, and on the second act you're in a pyramid full of traps and dangerous ghosts. How cool is that?.

Not only that, but you get to play as Knuckles, which is probably one of the best Sonic characters ever made. He can climb, glide, and be played in almost all of the Sonic stages, even the Sonic 3 ones! Yes, that's right. Tails can also be played in the Sonic & Knuckles stages as well. I also forgot to mention that Knuckles can also be played through the whole of Sonic 2! So if you have your old Sonic 2 cartridge still, then just place it in the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge and you'll be able to play through every stage with Knuckles on Sonic 2!.

You can't really go wrong with Sonic & Knuckles, even when you don't have Sonic 3. You've still got some of the fast Sonic moments, and the coolest characters in it. If you really want the ultimate experience, then make sure you have Sonic 3 & Sonic and Knuckles. You won't be disappointed.

If you are desperate to play this game, then you'll need to buy it, but it's not easy to get hold off that way, so I'd suggest that you get Sonic Mega Collection Plus for it. Not only do you get the best Sonic game on it, you also get the other best Sonic games on it as well!.

One of the best Sega Genesis games I have ever played
Catherine_Grace_Zeh3 March 2008
SONIC & KNUCKLES, in my opinion, is one of the best Sega Genesis games I have ever played. Even though it's been awhile since I've had a Sega Genesis system and game and played it as well, I enjoy it very much. In addition, even though I've never made it to the last level, I still enjoy the game. When and if this game is made available for download on the Nintendo Wii, I'm definitely going to download it. Also, I must say that the lock-on technology on the Sega Genesis version was really cool. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that the people at Sega Genesis know how to keep video game fanatics entertained. Now, in conclusion, if you're a video game fanatic, this is definitely one you'll want to play and own.

SONIC AND KNUCKLES + SONIC 3
TCurtis91921 April 2020
*THIS REVIEW IS ABOUT THE COMPLETE GAME PLAYABLE VIA LOCK-ON TECHNOLOGY*

Before playing "SONIC & KNUCKLES + SONIC 3" (1994) I always feel nervous. The kind of throat-swelling, mouth-drying, stomach-turning nerves that one gets in anticipation of a first date. I have completed this game consistently for so long and yet I always feel fear and excitement.

For the first two zones my mind's on seven chaos emeralds, earned in the blue sphere stages. Then my mind's on shields and rings. After Launch Base Zone Act 2 we're in Mushroom Hill and my mind is then on seven super emeralds. Once I've got them it's back to shields and rings.

Then it's all sneakers blazing to the Doomsday Zone in a race against time through space.

What this game has that the first two outings don't have (Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles also lack this as individual games) is a rip-roaringly brutal sense of relentless pursuit. The Doomsday Zone is the skull-splitting, edge of your seat climax to a sweaty, grimy, blistering chase.

Spin dashing through these colourful, dangerous, enormous, beautiful levels, to some of the best tracks in the Sonic canon, is intoxicating. The journey you take Sonic, Tails and Knuckles on is unforgettable. Playing it after "SONIC THE HEDGEHOG" (1991) and "SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2" (1992) is one awesome ride through a wonderful world

SONIC AND KNUCKLES
bluespheresdailyplus26 June 2020
Possibly the greatest platformer ever made (second only to Sonic 3 Complete, really) this is the pinnacle of 16bit gaming. Somehow everything we got from Sonic's 1, 2 and CD were fine tuned to absolute perfection and the end result is a breathtaking whopper of a rollercoaster ride!

With an incredible 12 zones (23 acts), each Act three times the size of the levels in the previous games, 14 blue sphere special stages (that's 14 emeralds to collect!), and an evolution of the great Super Sonic, plus elemental shields and fun bonus levels, not to mention Knuckles' campaign with levels altered for his abilities, this is AWESOME!

Play it, complete it, get all the emeralds, and bask in the glory of the experience that is Sonic & Knuckles.

Last of the original ones(I think), and pretty much least
TBJCSKCNRRQTreviews28 October 2011
This is based on the Sonic Plus Mega Collection, that allows you to save your progress anywhere and anytime you want, with a total of 20 spaces for the entire package. Without this, I have no idea how anyone could stand making it through this. Some of these developers were just cruel. The hedgehog fights Dr.(he spent years at medical school to earn being referred to as that, you know) Ivo Robotnik after the Death Egg crashes to their planet following the end of StH3(which this is an expansion pack to). This time, he teams up with Knuckles the... Echidna(I think they have shots for that, dude), and you can play through this as either of them(not Tails). The best thing(in fact, one of the only good ones) about this is that it also allows you to control aforementioned red creature for the VG it's an addition to, which is a ton of fun. He(?) can "float", glide through the air by double-hopping(do this as the blue hero, and you'll either do a flip blades attack, or if you have one of the powerups(that also grant one shield), you'll utilize its special ability... the electric one does a boost(and attracts rings all the time), the water one will let you bounce, and the flaming one will let you bolt yourself forward as a fireball, flying briefly), and if he hits a straight wall when doing this, he will grab onto it and can climb up or down it, Assassin's Creed-style. These two moves will allow him to reach areas the other two(or in this one, the other one) can't, and in general it's a different experience. Like the others, he can do the buzzsaw move and whenever he jumps, he'll be "round" and in both cases he can take out foes in that form. The enemies are a good example of how much this just goes for frustrating and slowing down the player. Look, we get it, this is really short, and you wanted to hide that. How about making is so enjoyable that we return to it? Of all of these classic entries in the series, this is the one I'm least likely to replay. Every single thing you fight in this behaves and/or is designed in a manner that makes it more likely you'll be hit by them, and this makes them obnoxious even when they may be creatively done. The same is true of the few levels this holds, plenty of things around that provide challenges that you just want to get past(there is a massive difference between difficulty and merely being annoying). With that said, there are clever new objects. Actually, they go a little crazy with that. This began in the previous one, and it goes into hyperdrive here. Old stuff is played around with, turned into something new(instead of brand new ones), and things "aren't what they seem"(when was that ever a theme in these? Things hidden, sure, but things being something else, at times the opposite, of what it appears to be?). And then there's how confusing the areas are, how long you can spend just trying to find your way(again, this is unlike the others... the entertainment came from trying to find hidden places, getting everything out of the zones before you leave them, not having trouble making progress). Again, yes, you have a tiny experience here, please stop trying to hide that or artificially extending it. This has a boss fight at the end of each portion, and some of these are kind of interesting, in tactic required and what they look like. Where the earlier ones would have a "big screw me region" as The Spoony One might put it(censored, at least) that you just had to pound when you could to get them, most of these require something else. Some of them, you have to make them hurt themselves, sort of driving themselves to suicide - too bad you can't hand them over the joystick and make them try this... oops, I'm back to criticizing it. The music remains poor. Nothing particularly fascinating is left(evidently, or they didn't have any more ideas) to make stretches out of, so we just get the standard forest(this time during autumn! That's fresh, right?), a desert and pyramid, a hidden palace and the, by now, usual ending(see first sentence of this review). Well, there's the two kinds of bonus bits. That dull slot machine is back, where you might get lucky and earn much of anything, while most of the time you'll just be struggling to go in the direction you want to as it constantly turns back and forth. It's not worth the effort. The other one, however, is my favorite of any of these. There's a charge at the bottom that gradually makes its way up. Touch it, you go back out of the spot. Same if you reach the top. Along the way, there are pinball machine flippers(and similar) on the far-apart sides, as well as numerous "juiced" orbs that enable you to lunge yourself(what? It's magnetism!) in any direction(you will need to adjust it yourself, and often fast, or it'll be too late). Using all of these, you can get extra lives, black cue balls, empty bubbles, rings, etc. This is colorful and bright as usual, with a children-friendly tone that isn't offensive to anyone over the age of 7. Graphics haven't changed particularly since the first(only the mechanics have improved, to be perfectly honest)... they're reasonable for the time. The gameplay remains platform action adventure. There is nothing disturbing in this, albeit it has been known to cause "fist through television screen" reactions in certain audience members. I recommend this to only the biggest fans of this franchise(much like the other kinds of titles released under this same banner... Sega, you got greedy)... actually, maybe not, because they didn't sign up for this. No, this is for those who want something tough for the sake of being it. 6/10

Part 2 of the best Sonic has ever been
MegaWatOfficial27 July 2022
I would have greatly preferred to have reviewed this and Sonic 3 as "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" (as one game) instead of doing them separately, but I guess it's nobody's fault except the limitations of the otherwise awesome Sega Genesis. With that said, I'll do my best in reviewing them both concisely. Anyway, most of how I feel about this game has already been said in my Sonic 3 review what with this being the 2nd half to a grander package, but for the sake of a review, I'll still go over what's so great about this game(s).

The level design not only focuses decently on speed, but also exploration and fun inclusions like the awesome elemental shields that give you fun abilities based on said elements all while giving you an extra hit, the boss battles are not only inspired and memorable, but also fun to take down, the visuals are way more lively than ever before, the music is some of the best in any Sonic game to date, the blue sphere special stages are the best executed in any Sonic game and are super fun and satisfying to complete, and the overall package is excellent. All of this makes this 2nd half every bit as great as the first half, and when you combine the 2, you really can't do much better with the blue blur.

The only "flaw" I can think of here is that maybe the difficulty curve between the end of Sonic 3 and the beginning of this game is a bit odd. Sonic 3, like most other games, is a bit difficult by the end, and because this was originally in a separate cartridge, the level after that difficult part in Sonic 3 which is the first level here (Mushroom Hill Zone) really isn't THAT hard at all. I know this is to not be overbearing for those who picked this game up on its own at the time, but it's still something worth noting.

However, because of how fun and excellently designed the levels are, this dip in difficulty really didn't register all that much, because I was busy enjoying the level. If anything, after the hard bits of Sonic 3, the temporary dip in difficulty can act as a nice way to get your bearings back so you'll want to keep going and experience the 3rd Sonic game as it was meant to be experienced to begin with, what with how huge it is.

Overall, just like Sonic 3, this continues to show the blue blur in peak form. Some may prefer to go super fast and not worry too much about exploration like in Sonic 2, but I feel all of what this game(s) brings and improves upon, this game(s) still reigns supreme as one of the best of all time.

Sonic 3... part 2
SSJAniFan26 December 2003
Okay, this game is NOT Sonic 4, or even chapter 4 of the series. It is actually a continuation of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The reason the game was split into two parts was because the Genisis cartridge did not have enough space to fit the entire game. The lock-on ability, when used with Sonic 3, lets the player finally play Sonic the Hedgehog 3 the way it was really meant to be. Gamers can finally experience the complete story. Meanwhile, Sonic 2 can also be hooked up, and allow gamers to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2! That's fun, but it is slightly tougher since Knuckles can't jump as high as Sonic, but luckily his abilities, such as climbing, balance it out. In general, Sonic and Knuckles, especially when locked on with Sonic 3, is an excellent game, and a must-buy for fans of the 'hog!

Sonic 3 comes to an end
CuriosityKilledShawn24 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I was mildly irritated when Sonic 3 ended, or should I just say "stopped"? The game pretty just closed with a black screen and no sequence. Sonic & Knuckles is the true end, but not before spinning through 5 more levels and yet another confrontation with Robotnik on the Death Egg.

There's nothing breathtakingly new about the level design. If you've played one Sonic you've played 'em all in this regard. But the varied themes and tunes will keep you entertained. I think that Lava Reef Zone may well be my favorite Sonic tune ever.

I've still to play as Knuckles and use the lock-on technology. But no matter how much I play or how hard I try there's no way I'll be able to get through the ENTIRE game and grab all 14 Chaos Emeralds. The Emerald stages are just too hard. With all 14 Chaos Emeralds you transform into Hyper Sonic, which I have never seen. But, to be honest I think there are only about 5 people in the history of the world who have been able to unlock Hyper Sonic.

This was the last "true" 2D Sonic game. He has, controversially, lost his way (and his fans) since Sonic & Knuckles. The Sonic Advance games are good, and Sonic Adventure DX was also loads of fun. But something...I dunno what, has just been lacking. Where Sonic has failed again and again Mario has succeeded many times over. Strange.

Lock On!
hadjiquest7917 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is a cool game. I got this for my Sega Mega Drive/Genesis system. This was the only cassette to utilise the Lock-on Technology. This feature allowed to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2 & 3. Here is a really cool feature: Lock-on with Sonic 1 and you can practise some bonus stages. To do this, power on the Mega Drive/Genesis with Sonic & Knuckles game linked to Sonic 1, hit start when the screen says "NO WAY!"

Knuckles looks so cute whenever he did his shadow boxing gesture (a.k.a. the "Put up your dukes" gesture). All you had to do was let him stand still for about 10 seconds and you could see him do that. He can also plough through stones. I love how Knuckles glides.

A 4th Adventure for Sonic
rossrobinson30 August 2003
Sonic is back for the 4th time, but this time he's on a team with Knuckles. The 4th adventure takes you on an excitement adventure, the same speed skills and more new adventure's levels filed with loops and new creatures. Sonic and Knuckles battle their way to get back the Chaos emraids for the 4th time. can they get them or will Dr Robotnik have them to himself forever. We'll have to find out as we can play the 4th adventure game.

Warning: Spoilers
I loved this game! I rented it all the time as a kid, as it had really cool features, too bad it's so rare now. I haven't played this game in years, but I have really fond and strong memories of it, I always thought it was so cool, how you could lock it onto Sonic 2&3, as I always had a lot of fun doing that, hell in Sonic 2 Knuckles could climb things, and get to places I couldn't get with Sonic or Tails. As for the game, from what I remember I had a lot of fun playing it, you get to jump into the big rings just like you could in Sonic 3,and my sister has actually beat this game, unfortunately I could not. I have been planning to search for this game for a while now that Sega Genises, isn't made anymore, but I can't seem to find it anywhere, plus the effects were really good from what I remember. Seeing Knuckles aligning himself with Sonic was definitely cool, and he has a lot of the same features as Sonic!, however I missed Tail's presence. I loved this game! I rented it all the time as a kid, as it had really cool features, too bad it's so rare now, but if you can find this somewhere Go get it immediately you shouldn't regret it if your a Sonic fan!.

P.S if I find the game I will update this review immediately. ***** out of 5
