An up-close and personal view
ce-311 April 2007
Those of us who enjoy films seldom, if ever, meet the folks who make them possible. In that respect, I found "We,the Screenwriter" to be something very special. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the individual screenwriters discuss what it is to be a screenwriter, what they thought about, considered, evaluated. And because they were filmed in conversation, I was able to see what they actually look like...to meet them in person so to speak. The conversation was that intimate and that honest. Michael Steven Gregory and the stars of his film have done someone like me a great service in that very special look behind the script.

A Gimmicky Mess
nobigfiles12 August 2011
The subject of the craft, lifestyle and experiences of screen writing, told right from the horse's mouth is a slam-dunk for a tasty and satisfying documentary, since the category isn't rich with existing titles. That makes "We, The Screenwriter" such a disappointment. What the director has produced is an irritating and gimmicky mess, full of distracting visual effects-jumpy film, fake scratches, etc ... Also, the editing style and organization of the material is so jumpy and jumbled that it annoyed and frustrated me. Any documentary that thinks its subject isn't interesting enough without a lot of showy, 'look at me' crap isn't, generally, worth watching. One is better off watching "Tales From The Script" or "Dreams on Spec."

Captures the essence of the screen writing psyche
mayeski11 April 2007
As the writers tell their individual stories, it becomes clear that they share a certain something, hard to describe in these few words here, that allows them, each in their own way, to reach deep into their gut and pull out their imperfect mortal failings and use them to massage their scripts into works of ingenious power and depth.

The staging and editing reached a perfection seldom seen in the world of documentary story-telling, and like his previous work sets Gregory on a pedestal that others should try to reach.

If you write, anything, or just know a writer, or would like to know a writer - don't miss this film!
