Here's a shot of the famous Parisian boulevard shot by James White when he was in town for the Paris Exposition. Mostly it's a view of the carriages and their occupants, with a few of the drivers uncertain of how to get around the camera in the middle of the street.

There may be a tendency to confuse this with White's PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE CHAMPS ELYSSES, but they are two distinct movies. In this one, the camera is set in the middle of the street, looking at oncoming traffic. In the other, the camera moves, first swinging from a view of the Arc de Triomphe and then track on down the road.

Champs Elysees (1900)

*** (out of 4)

This Edison short shows off one of the most famous streets in Paris, as it looked back in the day of course. The movie runs just over a minute but it's not got some visuals and a very funny, almost accident. Seeing the old-fashioned carriages as they go up and down the street is the main reason to watch this film. It certainly captures a part of history that we can't re-create. The funniest moment of the film happens when one of the carriages doesn't know which way to turn to avoid the camera and there's almost a collision.
