Marin County, California, August 3, 2000: The double murder of James "Jim" Gamble, age 54, and his partner Jennifer "Jenny" Villarin, age 45, shocks Northern California's bucolic Marin County. June 20, 1997, Sarasota, Florida: The quiet Sarasota, FL neighborhood of Mirror Lake wakes up to a nightmare when Henry Caneva, a 76-year-old retired successful car salesman, is found strangled to death. He was the live-in boyfriend of Janet Scott, age 50, who had also been brutally attacked and left for dead with a crushed windpipe, but she managed to survive. Detectives are not having any success in solving this crime, until January 5, 1998, when a 911 call for a family disturbance between 39-year-old John Whiteley and his girlfriend, 41-year-old Lela Hodges comes in to the emergency call center. The investigators are able to connect the suspects with a DNA match and confessions. In the end, both Whiteley and Hodges are arrested and indicted for the murder of Henry Caneva and the attempted murder of Janet Scott. Lela Scott Hodges was the daughter of Ro Scott, who was the deceased husband of the Mirror Lake attempted homicide, Janet Scott. In Spring of 2000, in a plea bargain for both perpetrators, they were both convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. They were both released in 2015 with time taken off their sentences for "good behavior". The actual victim, Janet Scott, appears on this show and shares her story of the harrowing night of crime that she survived.
