Video document of Chapel Hill's music scene at it's peak
davidals17 December 2003
An excellent document showcasing the best of Chapel Hill, NC's music scene at it's early-90s peak. Directed by Norwood Cheek (a musician and filmmaker active in the community), YOUNG ROCK is an excellent snapshot, showcasing the stylistic diversity and off-the-cuff creativity that galvanized locals for years. An opportunity is missed however - this could've been fashioned into something a bit deeper - investigating the creative roots of the scene, and showcasing a bit more of the actual town and it's residents to provide context, which is missing here. And heightening quirk and eccentricity (over the human and creative drives behind the people appearing here) is easy, but says little else about where this creative community came from or was headed.
