The precursor to the "Time Code" idea.
littlealex4727 March 2004
This director came up with the concept of multiple screens in one shot 25 years before "Time Code" appeared.

It is a short film 10 minutes. It contains 9 screens (3x3) with 8 stationary cameras and one camera inside a moving bus. The characters move around the screens as they enter different areas of the 'stage' and the sound follows one character as he moves through all screens.

The key character wears brightly coloured clothing so he is easy to spot in the screens.

As in Time Code the plot is not very exciting and the value of the film is using the medium of multiple screens in one shot.

Road to Tango

Warning: Spoilers
"Nowa ksiazka" or "The New Book" is a 10-minute short film from 40 years ago written and directed by Polish filmmaker Zbigniew Rybczynski a couple years before his work on the cult classic "Angst" and before his Academy Award win. However, in his work here, you can already see his approach to film. He loved depicting several happenings that have (at least partially) a connection to each other, a style he also used in several of his other works (at least the ones I have seen), including his Oscar-winning "Tango". In terms of "The New Book" you probably have to watch this one 9 times in order to fully understand what exactly is going on, probably more times in order to fit the puzzle of 9 segments together. Unfortunately, this is not a watch exciting enough to watch it more than once really and that is already more than enough, even if you hardly understand at all what is going on. No surprise his style here was not taken up by other filmmaker in the following years. It's nowhere near Rybczynski's best and I cannot recommend it.

Purely experimental...

This short film by Zbig Rybczynski is very experimental in nature--like an art film that completely defies anyone from giving it a numerical rating. I didn't at all enjoy it, but I really don't think Rybczynski made the film to be enjoyed but it was more to try some new technique that isn't really intended to be cinematic.

"Nowa Ksiazka" consists of 9 screens arranged in a giant square (much like the opening to "The Brady Bunch" TV show). They all work in sequence and are like watching the monitor of a closed circuit television watching people on a particular street. Not a lot happens other than seeing people do their everyday things and move from one screen to another in many cases.
