Okay, but needs more

Warning: Spoilers
While every attempt was made to pack this nine minute documentary on the movie Wrong Turn with a lot of different and varied information, it's just too short to be very effective. This type of "behind the scenes" documentary works best with at least a thirty minute run time. Otherwise, too many interesting and informative bits are cut too short. Don't watch this if your expecting an in-depth study of any area of Wrong Turn.

However, what is presented is generally well done. The stories of selecting the director, the inbred hillbilly make-up, and other parts do provide the viewer with a taste of how the movie came to be. The make-up portions were easily my favorite. It was very interesting to see the mountain men without their make-up.

rotten meat

This featurette contains interviews with pretty much all the cast, director, producer and whatnot. But none of them say much of anything. After watching it, you're thinking to yourself: "Self, that was much to do about nothing" In fact all the extras that can be found on the "Wrong Turn" DVD are all fluffy and insubstantial. That's pretty much a shame as the movie itself isn't that bad and I kinda dug it (don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the similar indy movie "The Undertow" quite a bit more, but for a teen horror film made by Hollywood, this film wasn't bad) I just wish the extras weren't as dull and tedious as what we got on this disk. This short 9 minute documentary can be found on 20th Century Fox's Region 1 of the "Wrong Turn" DVD.

My Grade: D

Fresh Meat: The Wounds of 'Wrong Turn' (2003)

*** (out of 4)

Good nine-minute featurette that can be found on Fox's release of WRONG TURN. Director Rob Schmidt and make-up artist Stan Winston get the majority of the running time as the two of them talk about what drew them to the picture and exactly what they wanted to see in it. Schmidt makes an interesting comparison between porn and horror and then starts to talk about wanting to scare people. Winston, on the other hands, talk about how this was one of the scariest screenplays he had ever read and then he discusses why he wanted to make the redneck cannibals so bad. From here we learn about the type of make-up used to create them and how each of the three actors were so important in bringing the characters to life. There's also talk about the decapitation death and how it was filmed. There's certainly nothing ground-breaking here but fans of WRONG TURN should find it entertaining.
