Pierce Brosnan lacks the requisite Neeson-like conviction for this blundering conspiracy caper
A techno-thriller for people a bit intimidated by their smartphone, I.T. is a dull-witted movie that pits Pierce Brosnan’s millionaire businessman Mike Regan against troubled computer genius Patrick (Jason Barry). When Patrick is rebuffed by Regan’s daughter, he turns the family’s hi-tech house against them. Brosnan lacks the conviction of Liam Neeson when it comes to the middle-aged badass genre.

We are only a few days away from welcoming a new year and with it sees the releases of the critically-acclaimed new drama/fantasy A Monster Calls, directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible).
We had the pleasure of speaking to the screenwriter of the film Patrick Ness, who wrote the book in which the film is based. During our chat, we spoke to the writer about adapting his own work for the screen, the influence of Bayona on the story and why Liam Neeson was perfect for the role of The Monster…
And if speaking to Patrick wasn’t enough, we had the pleasure of talking to the film’s director J.A. Bayona (which you can watch here) and Liam Neeson and Lewis MacDougall, the video of which you can view right here.

Martin Scorsese's passion project finally hits the big screen. We take a look at the thought-provoking, disturbing period drama, Silence...
There’s a scene in The Wolf Of Wall Street that aptly sums up the moral outrage underpinning the whole film. It takes place after FBI agent Patrick Denhma visits filthy rich Wall Street trader Jordan Belfort on his luxury yacht. Denham (Kyle Chandler) has just had a wedge of dollar bills thrown at his back by a gloating Belfort, and the agent sits alone on a Manhattan subway, brooding. In this quiet moment, it’s possible to read all kinds of things in Denham's face: the injustice of a universe that rewards a crook like Belfort while Denham, an honest working man, wears a cheap suit and rides the subway home. What kind of system allows people like Belfort to live in luxury?

So many goodies in the cinemas candy store this upcoming Awards Season! Oh,boy, oh boy.
It’s “Good Movie Season” when we get Hollywood heavy-hitters (both top popcorn entertainment and Oscar wannabees), and the best of the film festival circuit, most recently from Toronto. Many films will have an awards qualifying run in 2016 and open officially in 2017.
While we have not seen some of these (although we have seen some trailers), some movies are sure to disappoint. That said, here is Wamg’s list of highly-anticipated films, both big blockbuster entertainment and seriously meaty cinema.

Doctor Strange – Nov. 4
The Sherlock supreme becomes the sorcerer supreme as one of the founding Marvel comics heroes finally arrives in the Marvel “movie-verse”.
While other Marvel Studios flicks have explored the worlds of hi-tech, Norse mythology, and space opera, director Scott Derrickson guides us through the realms of magic.

Chicago – When a disaster strikes, often the most unlikely people will become the primary responders. This is the premise for “The 33,” a new feature film about the Chilean mining collapse in 2010, which trapped 33 men for 69 days. The film goes deep inside the event, and is directed with due respect by Patricia Riggen.
Ms. Riggen was born in Mexico, and initially studied journalism, until completing her Masters degree in directing and screenwriting at Columbia University in New York City. While in school, she completed two short documentaries, “The Cornfield” (2002) and the film-festival-award-winning “Family Portrait” (2004). Her narrative film debut was the popular “Under the Same Moon” (2007), featuring America Ferrara. She directed “Lemonade Mouth” in 2011 for the Disney Channel, and “Girl in Progress” (2012) before landing the assignment for “The 33.”

The first trailer for the Chilean miners drama, The 33, dropped on Wednesday, which offered a first look at the film starring Antonio Banderas and directed by Patrick Riggen. The movie also stars Juliette Binoche, Rodrigo Santoro, James Brolin, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bob Gunton, and Gabriel Byrne.
The 33 follows the 33 miners that were trapped in a mine in Chile in 2010 and seems to be a dramatized version of the struggles they went through.
It looks like this could be this year’s tearjerker melodrama, but maybe has a little more going for it based on the relatively impressive cast that has been assembled. Not to mention, the film looks like it could use the closed space of the mine in order to get some great performances out of actors such as Banderas, who haven’t really spread their wings with a good project lately (yes, we remember Spongebob, Antonio...

When movies like this star the likes of Liam Neeson, they open on 3,000 screens. It’s difficult not to see racism and sexism in the disparity. I’m “biast” (pro): love Viola Davis

Universal Pictures released their new comedy flick, "Ted 2," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out and thought it was extremely funny, delivering laughs at every turn. The plotline was amazingly silly though, but it's about a Teddy bear that came to life and smokes pot, so I guess it would be really hard to expect anything other than extreme silliness. Anyways, the movie stars: Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Mark Wahlberg, Dennis Haysbert, Amanda Seyfried, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane and Jessica Barth. In the new flick, Ted (Seth MacFarlane) has gotten married to a hot blonde, named Tami-Lynn. Unfortunately, they run into major marital problems after a couple of months, and ultimately decide they need a baby to help repair the God forsaken marriage. However, things go from bad to really worse when the government decides that Ted is not actually a real person, and that he's actually deemed as property instead.

For every Harry Potter or Hunger Games series, there are those franchises that didn't quite set the world on fire...
Since Insurgent came out, I’ve been thinking about those less fortunate: the franchise wannabes. While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.
For the sake of simplicity, this list will zero in on Ya franchise-starters, films adapted from a young adult novel or with that audience in mind. There are plenty of more mature films that struggled such as Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, The A-Team...

Chicago – There were basically two careers for Pierre Morel, before he directed the mega-hit “Taken,” starring Liam Neeson, and afterward. The French-born cinematographer, camera operator and now director is releasing “The Gunman,” an action film that stars Sean Penn. Like “Taken,” the motivations for the action are based in the real world, and “The Gunman” travels to Africa, London and Barcelona on his way to redeeming his soul.
Morel has had an adventurous career, in both European cinema and in notable films, beginning with his days as a camera operator on “The Truth about Charlie” (2002), “The Dreamers” (2003) and “Before Sunset” (2004). He was the cinematographer on “The Transporter” (2002) and Director of Photography on “Love and Other Disasters” (2006). His breakthrough came in 2008, when he directed “Taken.” The film resonated with audiences, and allowed his career to move into a new direction.

Chicago – One of the specialities of HollywoodChicago.com is the film and personality interview. The majority of these chats came through me, Patrick McDonald, and I couldn’t narrow it down to a top 10 or even a top 20. For 2014, there were 25 top interviews, and it is a diverse range of voices.
It is a privilege to get the opportunity to participate in the promotional tours, awards ceremonies, film festivals, book appearances, phoners and other lucky happenstances that feature the notable among us. To whittle down the list, I mostly thought about what was said in these interviews, whether inspirational or provocative – plus the status of the participants, whether they are up-and-coming or established.
The interview highlights are broken down by “Background and Behind-the-Scenes” and the “Memorable Quote” associated with each subject, and are often accompanied with exclusive photography by Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com. Four notables who just missed the...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (again), and as usual it’s getting to those last few weeks before the big day when creative ideas and planning make way for frantic grabs at whatever is left on the shelves after the Black Friday zombie hordes have cleared everything out.
But fear not: because the best of Christmas is watching movies, re-watching old TV specials and trying hard to forget that George Lucas ever decided that anyone wanted a Star Wars Christmas show, there’ll always be a helping hand round these parts for those who want it.
So if you’re buying for a difficult brother, a picky sister or just for the film, gaming or TV fan in your life, what follows is a compendium of the finest gift ideas for this year’s festivities, as usual there are massive opportunities to win most of what has been included…...

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this occasional column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Fleming: I found it interesting that audiences turned up their noses at A Walk Among The Tombstones, a thriller that had what should have been all you need for a hit — Liam Neeson on a one-sheet, holding a gun. The filmmaker Scott Frank made a throwback to the ’70s films he grew up loving. The title didn’t help: didn’t it evoke memories of being dragged to the cemetery to pay posthumous respects to Grandpa? In my view, it got maligned unfairly by critic squeamishness over grisly scenes that weren’t there. Kenny Turan called it Eli Roth torture porn, though Roth told me last week the critic told him he’d never actually watched a Roth film.

Chicago – Not many Oscar winning screeenwriters change the course of their professional lives because of a dream (story below), but Paul Haggis is an exceptionally brilliant writer whose credits include “Crash” (2005) and “Million Dollar Baby” (2004) – which both won Best Picture – and his new film, “Third Person.”
“Third Person” is about the life a writer, portrayed by Liam Neeson, and it is about the circumstances surrounding his life. The ensemble cast includes Mila Kunis, Adrien Brody, Maria Bello, Olivia Wilde, James Franco and Kim Basinger, all surrounding and inspiring Neeson’s character. This is the fourth film Paul Haggis has directed, among his many creations as a TV and film writer.

In our definitive ranking of Batman's cinematic outings this week, Digital Spy put Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins at number one. I could lie and say that we agonised over its placement, but in fact the decision was almost unanimous among the staffers who had a say in the list.
Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy is unquestionably the greatest comic book saga on screen, but the expanded scope and sweep of the later instalments comes at a cost. The Dark Knight and its sequel become more about the mask than the man behind it, and for that reason they've stood the test of time marginally less well than the focused and intimate Batman Begins. Strange as it may sound, what makes Nolan's dark, cerebral origin story the best Batman movie of all time is the fact that it really isn't one.

As we are full-on in the Lent season, our definitive list will focus on films about religion or some aspect of it. The #1 qualification to be on this list is to deliberately focus on religion, a religious figure, or have the presence of a religion/faith as an integral plot point. For example, most of Luis Bunuel’s films can be viewed as attacks on the church, but they aren’t literally about Christianity; therefore, they won’t be included. So, on this list, we’ll look at as many different faiths as possible (though, there are obviously a lot more movies about Christianity than any other religion). We’ll even dabble into cults and sects that don’t really exist. Final rule: no documentaries. We’re keeping this fictional.

NBA donating Jason Collins’ jersey revenue to Lgbt charities, Tituss Burgess joins Tooken, Robbie Rogers feels constraints of being a role model
Jared Leto snapped up the Independent Spirit Award for his portrayal of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, increasing the odds that he’ll pick up the Oscar Sunday night for the role of a transgender HIV patient in the early 1980s.
The federal judge in Kentucky who ruled that the state must recognize out of state same-sex marriages has put a three week stay on his order. The state had asked for 90 days to appeal, but Judge Heyburn says they should be able to figure out how to implement the order by March 20.
The NBA is going to donate proceeds from Jason Collins’ record selling #98 jersey to the Matthew Shepard Foundation and Glsen. Autographed jerseys that Collins wears in games will be auctioned off to benefit the same organizations.

Heavy breathing, hammering heart and outrageous enthusiasm in the form of tiny little squeals were just some of the things I experienced right after receiving a text from my editor last summer asking me If I was available and wanted to attend a set visit for Xmen. Umm, let’s not kid ourselves. Considering the film has an amazing all-star A-list cast and the prequel, First Class is pretty kick-ass, naturally it was a no-brainer. However, when I discovered Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy would be filming on set that day. I jumped on the chance like a cheetah on its prey.

A first image arrives for Seth MacFarlane's next comedy, A Million Ways To Die In The West...
Family Guy and American Dad creator Seth MacFarlane successfully made the leap to feature directing with 2012's comedy Ted, a hit which eventually went on to make more than $500m at the box office.
MacFarlane's next film will be A Million Ways To Die In The West, a comedy western with a starry cast and the director/animator/screenwriter/comedian himself in the lead. That he's managed to assemble the support of actors such as Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Liam Neeson and Sarah Silverman is evidence of MacFarlane's rising Hollywood status following Ted's success - and westerns aren't necessarily easy projects to get off the ground in Tinseltown these days at any rate, unless your name happens to be Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers or Gore Verbinski.

Matt Smith has ditched Doctor Who for Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. It's quite a contrast, and he's not the first to do this sort of thing. So why do actors love these big switcheroos?
Matt Smith really doesn't want to be typecast as the guy from Doctor Who any more. That's why he's starring as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho – a musical stage version of American Psycho, in fact. As professional handbrake turns go, it's pretty drastic. But he isn't the first. History is littered with actors who've been pushed to extreme measures to break out of their typecasting straitjackets. Here are some of the best.
Hugh Grant
It's a shame nobody really saw Cloud Atlas, because it contained the largest assembly of actors performing against type in modern cinema. Lovely, funny Tom Hanks played a sort of post-apocalyptic caveman. Halle Berry was a male Korean dentist. But most startling of all,...

Is anyone a better movie actor right now than Christian Bale? (Okay, I’ll give you Daniel Day-Lewis… but it’s close and getting closer.) The 39-year-old Welshman is fully in his prime, demonstrated most recently by two powerful performances landing in the heart of Oscar season. The flashier role might be in David O. Russell’s American Hustle, which doesn’t open until Dec. 20. In Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace, which opened Wednesday and expanded Friday, he plays the good-intentioned ex-con whose pursuit of justice — after his ne’er-do-well brother (Casey Affleck) goes missing — puts him on...

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the role of Julian Assange in Bill Condon's The Fifth Estate. Here's our review...
Is it possible to make an accurate WikiLeaks film? As Benedict Cumberbatch’s Julian Assange puts it in the closing minutes of The Fifth Estate, the truth changes through every viewpoint - thus posing the question, what is the truth? And who really knows it?
Bill Condon’s ambitious and zealous biopic on the early days of WikiLeaks is an entirely mixed bag. It exerts itself in trying to give a broad picture of WikiLeaks whilst honing in the relationship of founder Julian Assange and his second-in-command Daniel Domscheit-Berg. Benedict Cumberbatch nails the former’s twitchy tics and pronounced accent, and his portrayal, although not exactly fair on Assange himself, is one of the highlights of The Fifth Estate. Likewise Daniel Brühl (who recently excelled...

After injecting some action life into Liam Neeson's career with Taken, director Pierre Morel just might do the same thing with Sean Penn. Heat Vision has word that Morel is currently in talks to direct Penn in an action thriller called Prone Gunman, based on Jean-Patrick Macnhette's novel of the same name with a script by Dredd and Vantage Point director Pete Travis. In a story that's not much different from Taken, the story will have Penn playing international hitman artin Terrier who is betrayed by the organization he works for and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat-and-mouse across all of Europe. More below! Here's a more detailed synopsis of the book, which also adds a love interest: French hit man Martin Terrier wants to quit the killing-for-francs business and go home to marry his childhood sweetheart. The 2012 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards 2012 was a curious year for movies. To look at a year in movies at a glance we often turn straight to blockbusters and in the case of 2012 it may seem as if it really wasn't that great a year. Then you begin to drill down deeper and even films that divided the audience created large amounts of discussions, and beyond blockbusters there were plenty of middle ground to small-budget indie features that were quite powerful. As far as discussion pieces go, here on RopeofSilicon a lot of time was dedicated to divisive films as The Grey, Prometheus and Looper. A conversation involving the ending of The Grey was quite popular, I posed theories on Looper's theme more than once, the Zero Dark Thirty torture controversy was annoying, but necessary and the movie that probably generated the most conversation was Prometheus, of which I wrote a massive six-page exploratory article.

Things must be getting serious between country crooner Taylor Swift and her new boyfriend, Conor Kennedy. She's already taken him home to meet her parents, Scott and Andrea.
A fan posted the picture above on Tumblr of Kennedy and Swift dining with her folks at a restaurant Aug. 9 in Nashville, where Swift owns a home.
On Aug. 1, a source confirmed to Us Weekly, "Taylor is officially dating Conor Kennedy."
Photos of Swift hugging Arnold Schwarzenegger's 18-year-old son, Patrick, over the July 4 holiday set the rumor mill churning that the two were dating. But it was actually Kennedy -- son of Robert Kennedy Jr. and the late Mary Kennedy -- with whom she was spending time.
"She is pretty head over heels," the source tells Us.
Swift has previously been linked romantically to celebs like Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, Joe Jonas and Taylor Lautner.

But it looks like Swift may have had her sights set on another member of the Kennedy clan -- son of Robert Kennedy Jr. and the late Mary Kennedy, Conor Kennedy (seen at right in the above inset).
The New York Post reports that the couple were seen kissing, holding hands and being "touchy-feely" over the weekend of July 21 at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Mass. The most chilling moment of a reflective ceremony came when Mary's good friend addressed the press before the service and HollywoodLife.com was right there. Mary Kennedy's suicide was beyond shocking for her family, and Kerry Kennedy -- Mary's best friend and the sister of her estranged husband Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. -- gave an emotional speech to press on before the May 19 funeral in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Bedford, N.Y., and HollywoodLife.com has the entire statement. "Mary suffered from depression and it's a disease that so many, many, many Americans suffer from," she said. "I just think about the story of Michael, the arch angel, who had to battle the forces of evil, had to battle Satan who was trying to enter paradise. And that's what Mary did her whole life. She was battling those demons and keeping them out of the paradise that was Mary.

In time for Saint Patrick's Day Irish A-Lister Liam Neeson has been named Ireland's greatest actor. The 59-year-old Ballymena-born actor saw off stiff competition in two separate polls for Sky Movies and Lovefilm, which also had Irish favorites Colin Farrell and Pierce Brosnan in the running. The go-to leading man for the world's top directors, Neeson's roles have included his unforgettable turns in the leads in Schindler's List and Michael Collins, the Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace and as the voice of Aslan in the Narnia franchise. The Sky Movies poll - held in association with its Irish actors season to be broadcast on Saturday and Sunday - saw Neeson win a whopping fifth of all the votes. In second place was Lawrence of Arabia star Peter O'Toole, followed by Farrell in third and Brosnan in fourth place. Meanwhile on the streaming and rental service Lovefilm Farrell was...

Liam Neeson, who is about to be back on the big screen in Wrath of the Titans (March 30) and Battleship (April 11), has been voted Ireland and the UK's favourite Irish actor.

I Was one of the few journalists allowed to see G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra prior to its 2009 release - indeed, I was the only person in the auditorium at the advance screening - and I enjoyed it (you can read my review here).
Despite an overabundance of explosions and a physics-defying climax, the blend of X-Men with Mission: Impossible and old-style Bond was a fun ride, and its reasonable box office of $302million ensured a sequel, even though it never came anywhere near the earnings of Transformers, also adapted from Hasbro toys. G.I. Joe managed one of the best August opening weekends on record and came tenth in America's list of summer blockbusters for 2009.
Director Stephen Sommers appreciated my support when he sent me a signed poster from the film on which he wrote (in silver pen): "In a world of negativity, you are a vital breath of fresh air.

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B. Harris; French television documentary on real-life case which inspired the film; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
