Excellent Stormy Daniels vehicle out-roms many mainstream coms
lor_29 September 2015
The modern rom-com is perhaps my least favorite genre - the prospect of seeing Dermot Mulroney or Hugh Grant kowtowing for 90 minutes to some "diva of the people" named Jennifer or Weigl or Roberts or Reese or Sandy is not my idea of entertainment. But bosomy Stormy, in just her second filmed screenplay effort, is empathetic and sexy in the familiar femme underdog role.

In big-budget Hollywoodland, you'd expect Jennifer Lopez in the part, and in fact she did play an approximation in her "Maid in Manhattan" opus. Bosomy Stormy, her assets hidden under a uniform, is Eric Masterson's maid, and after about five reels the wealthy dolt finally realizes what a charmer he has right under his nose.

In the meantime he's making hay with other women, notably Dolorian, who is the nasty bitch of Daniels's scenario, and plays that part well. (She had only a brief career, unfortunately).

With other very sexy femmes sharing the spotlight, notably superstar Jessica Drake as well as Monique Alexander, Aria and ever-reliable Nicole Sheridan, Stormy is careful not to dominate too much, even though the viewer is heavily identifying with her. One gimmick which should have been stolen by mainstream hacks by now is her last-minute substitution for a fancy dinner party as Eric has had a fight with fiancée Dolorian who handed back his engagement ring, and Stormy puts it on to bravely put on a show to impress his colleagues and investors. Final reel presentation by Eric of the ring for real to Stormy raised some ethical and aesthetic questions in my mind, but the storyline hung together adequately.

Since completing this pleasant and winning romance, Stormy has gone on to become one of the most successful directors in the business, and goes on fighting the good fight of keeping storyline Adult Entertainment alive in a world overloaded with wall-to-wall gonzo crap. "Without You" is an early landmark in that laudable career.
