Poop has never been so heartfelt, loving or soft!
looshkin8 December 2004
Warning: Spoilers
One of the most emotionally involving, deep, thoughtful films I have ever seen. And it's about poo! Using claymation this minor animation masterpiece tells the tale of a lil' poo all alone in the world questioning it's existence, 'Doggy Poo' creates a realistic character in poo making one genuinely care. The voice talent also is to be applauded; Poo is voiced by a child that you won't hate after mere minutes! After being dropped by a Jack Russell the lil' fella meets various characters passing him along the way; all who have found their place in life. Poo then struggles to see why he's here. If you've any interest in animation you really should check out this minor gem! However, maybe not one for the kids. Whilst not Von Trier, the first two thirds are very dark, but then again it might be a sensible, workable approach to explain death to children. Choose life.....choose Poo!

Cute and Surprisingly Deep

Okay.

A Korean children's film about dog crap...? Count me in!

I love Korean cinema, children films and dog crap. How couldn't I jump at the chance to watch this little gem of a film.

The story starts off with a Jack Russell lookin' pup taking a dump on the side of the road. After a moment, this dog poop amazingly becomes conscious. It opens its eyes, and almost immediately, begins pondering some pretty deep thoughts.

When talking with other characters or sitting alone, it's always pondering existence, wanting to know reason for life, or even thinking/talking about the subject of death.

These are all very mature ideas for a children's film, but mixing it with such a vibrant and loving feel, the movie takes these issues and makes them relatable for children and adults alike.

Doggy Poo is really quite a unique little film, due to some charming animation (most of it claymation), rather taboo ideas for a family film, and of course, it's lead character being a pile of dog crap.

It was a breath of fresh air for this viewer, and it remains a cute little film I'm sure most people will enjoy.

Not so much about death
ruonin27 August 2008
Jeesh, all these haters...I thought this was a story about finding yourself. That each person had some purpose...not about death or learning to deal with dying....Yes, it does have that thing about God but not being religious myself, I could still see it was just a good morale about finding your own self value, no matter where you came from. I would not suggest showing to little toddlers, but to children you could sit and actually interact with during and after the film. Yea, need to interact with your children so they won't bring poo into the house....that was sarcasm for a previous poster. Also the English Dub does grind at your ears, so if you can forgive some of the actors/actress voices and make it through the film, it can get a tear out of you.

What a Moving and Riveting Experience!
Pretentious_crap31 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The extrusion of Doggy Poo from the dog's anus tied my stomach into knots, I was so awe stricken as Doggy Poo realized that it had a conscious. The knots in my stomach started to intensify and pang as the ox drawn cart threatened to flatten our hero and it's friend as they discussed their purposes in life. There are many similar incidents in this film that will make you wriggle in your seat, as Doggy Poo interacts with other characters to discuss the meaning of life.

Digesting this film might be difficult for children as the subject matter is indeed existential, and you may think it's too radical as the dialectical tendencies reduce the subject matter to it's most basic components. Luckily the film only clocks in at thirty-minuets, which is short enough to prevent the child audience from becoming too agitated.

I don't want to spoil the end of the film for you, but you will feel that a great weight has been expelled from you as our main character discovers their purpose in life. You may even feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the film.

Beautiful

Warning: Spoilers
Before even reading the other reviews, I realised that this is one of those love-it-or-hate-it films. In fact, I found it slightly strange and weird at the start, but, as you keep watching, it becomes very absorbing. Deeper meanings aside, this film is fantastic, it is a mixture of very good animation with an intriguing plot line. I found the music especially good as it had a similar tune throughout but a different mood for every different scene/season. Some people say this film is advocating god, but in my opinion, the only thing the film is stressing about is about the beauty and preciousness of life and nature, no matter how seemingly unimportant it is (hence using the doggy poo as the main character and not a tree, for example). All in all, it is a magnificent film which once seen, will inspire you to go outside and stare at trees for a while. Well worth watching.

If you hated "Davy and Goliath"
imorgan738 June 2005
... then you'll hate this too. The religious message is less obvious with the subtitles than it is if you understand the Korean, but you can't miss the conclusion "God has a purpose for you" - that's nice and all, but one thing I can't stand about the bible bashers is their SNEAK ATTACKS. If this had advertised itself as a religious cartoon, then I wouldn't have wasted the money or time, but instead it's billed as an "eccentric" cartoon. I'm thinking Devo, I get Pat Boone.

Hey, if you want your religious beliefs confirmed by a cheap claymation piece of poo, then have at it. If you're looking for something interesting coming out of Korea, slug down some 'pem-ju' and rent "Old Boy

how can a movie about crap be so gosh darn cute?!
planktonrules16 March 2006
This is about the weirdest kids DVD I have ever seen. Although it's listed as being for ages 3 and up, many adults will find they are strangely attracted to this incredibly cute DVD,...about dog poo!! The Korean makers of this film have managed to instill a wonderful little personality into this,..."character". I think a lot of it was due to the excellent claymation but most of the reason it's so gosh darn endearing are the adorable voice actors. I looked at both the original Korean as well as the English language version on the DVD and both were incredibly high on the cute factor (though the Korean one is a bit better)! The music is awfully good, too. If you buy this for your kids, don't be surprised if you see it and become hooked too. What genius--being able to take such a repellent thing and turn it into gold. Nice job.

By the way, the Korean version has a song that is NOT on the American version. This song is great and I loved listening to the little Korean boy singing--so I preferred this version over the English one.

Its About Poo.... Enough Said!
bdoty10 April 2005
The animation quality of this feature is sub-par at best. That being said this low quality animation is the highlight of the film as it is at least passable and not complete junk like the story. The story has a strong focus on God and his role in the life of poo. I would think that this would be offensive to both the religious and non-religious types. I can understand how some people might think this film was a good to introduce your children to the idea of death and how to deal with it, but there is a huge problem with that notion. THE FILM IS ABOUT POO. Your children won't be able to stop laughing. If anything this film will belittle death and warp your children's notions of it. If you, as a parent, cannot confront your child about this subject matter, please do not use this film to do so. Find another, more able minded, adult to do it. This way your child will grow up normally and without the mental distress this film would have caused them. Just my 2 cents.

Poo Contemplates Meaning
matwi425 November 2007
It is an enjoyable film. Perhaps I have a twisted sense of humor, but the absurdity of a pile of poo contemplating its existence was quite enjoyable! It was well done for what it was meant to be. What made it even better was that it was clay animation, so the doggy poo had that going for it in being a "life-like" cartoon of poo! It isn't deeply philosophical, but it is an attempt to say that "hey, there is meaning/purpose to your existence. Yes, there is a religious aspect to this film, but nothing specific - only "God has a plan for me" type message, nothing more.

Over all, I recommend this for entertainment with a few friends, so you all can laugh at the absurdities. Although, I am considering letting my kid watch it just to see how she reacts and see where the conversation will lead from there.

Yeah

So pretty much this movie was absolutely horrible. How can anyone say this was good, it was about stupid dog feces! I do not recommend this movie it is way to cheesy and it had a very bad plot and i walked away angry from watching this turd for gosh dongle 45 minutes! It was horrible. Do not show it to your kids because they might end up bringing feces back into your home from outside and play with it. It will probably be very disgusting cause it was when my children did it. They just brought back tons of this stuff and spread it all over the floor and walls and tried to sing and dance with it. The music was also very very bad even though it was catchy at the beginning it was very repetitive!

Great film for the entire family
TimothyMcKann19 July 2008
When I first started watching this film On Demand,I gotta say this film really is a masterpiece, but when I watched it again one more time,It was time for me to buy it. But when I bought the movie on DVD. It was inspiring. I have to say that the animation in this movie was excellent, and it had beautiful music. I have to say that the people who made this movie have done a pretty good job. But what this film really teaches us,is that all things have a purpose and we have to accomplish that goal. And that is why God created us, because we have to make that goal possible. But however, this film is truly a masterpiece. So if want to see something good, then this is perfect for your collection, and keep it for generations to come, and show it to your children, and their children. You will see what I mean.

The main character is a problem yes, but there's others too
Horst_In_Translation19 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Doggy Poo" is a South Korean animated short film that runs for a bit over half an hour including credits. The director and co-writer here is Oh-Sung Kwon and he made this back in 2004, so next year it will have its 15th anniversary. For him as well as most other people who worked on this one, it is their only career effort. Maybe the subject of talking dog poo really hurts your career if it' the only credit you got. But it's not a failure all in all, but still there are major weaknesses. It is truly a bit gross there is no denying. Maybe Pixar or Disney could have made us forget about that, but Itasca cannot. Completely aside from that, the film dragged a bit and that's not good at all if it happens at this runtime already. The voice actors are tolerable, nothing more. As you can see from the cast list here on imdb, there is of course an English dub out. This is not anime, but judging from the animation you'd definitely not locate this one in Asia. It looks very western (not the genre obviously), very American. Another problem is that the film never really makes up its mind if it wants to be for kids only or for grown-ups mostly. Sometimes it is so childish and simple, while at other moments it tries to go for emotion and depth that is definitely above the little ones. All in all, I must say that I cannot be too sad that Kwon has not returned to filmmaking afterwards judging from the quality here. With all the time passed, chances are he probably never will. This film is not a piece of s*it/crap (pun indeed intended!) oh yes I went there, but also not close to being good enough for me to recommend the watch here. My suggestion is you skip these 30 minutes and watch something else instead.
