Nico, the young man at the center of this story, has suffered a great loss in his life. Now living with his veterinarian brother Fran in Buenos Aires, he cannot get out of his mind a brief encounter he experienced at an airport. Nico a rather shy youth does not capitalize on the occasion by asking the girl her name. Her memory haunts him.
As fate would have it, Luchi, the girl at the airport, happens to bring her pet rabbit to Fran for a check-up. Nico makes all kinds of excuses in order to get near her. His only friend is Santi, an aimless youth who loves stealing his mother prescription drugs to get high. What is the attraction between them? It appears Santi is what Nico is not. His boldness in stealing snacks from convenience stores does not even get him in trouble, but Nico feels bad about what his friend is doing. Nico is dragged, against his will, as his friend steals CDs or even rob a drug store where he is in cahoots with one employee to get drugs that will be sold for a profit.
The relationship between the brothers is not exactly a happy one. Nico would like to see the house in Valdivia their parents owned to be sold so the brother can expand on the vet's office and give them some badly needed cash. Fran is reluctant to do it. Nico has suffered the death of his parents in a small plane crash. Going now aimlessly with the only companionship of Santi does not satisfy him. Falling in love with Luchi is easy, but his wish to be with her is short lived as she has the opportunity of going away to Switzerland.
Fran suggests a trip back to Valdivia to Nico. That way he can paid what is owned and see about putting the house on the market. Fran even suggests to invite Santi along. His friend is too far gone into his own history of crime to fulfill his drug dependency. Sitting at a beach, the two friends are trying to relax. Nico turns on his Walkman and Santi begins telling his friend how sorry he is for what he has put his pal through, but it is too late; Nico cannot hear Santi's painful confession.
Directed by Ezequiel Acuna, "Como Un Avion Estrellado" is a reflective film, an ode to friendship and to love found, and lost. This film surprises in that the creator has done wonders with what appears to be an extreme low budget, limited resources, but with a lot of love on Mr. Acuna's part. He knows the rhythms of the big city and the petty crimes young people get involved with. The other main theme is hopelessness for Nico in a situation he cannot overcome, either at home, with his pal Santi, or even the love he feels for Luchi that gets nowhere.
There are outstanding appearances by Ignacio Rogers, Manuela Martelli, Santiago Pedrero and Carlos Echevarria. The four young actors do an amazing job for the director. Mr. Rogers and Mr. Pedrero have the meatiest roles of Nico and Santi. Both are sensational. The beautiful Manuela Martelli is compelling as Luchi.
