Sure it's got blood and gore....so what?!

Warning: Spoilers
This short is from the Moviemark DVD Indie Shorts Project Vol. 1 (2006). Most of the shorts in this set are rather lackluster and MIDNIGHT SNACK did very little to impress me. Now I have reviewed hundreds of independent shorts and I usually DON'T give negative reviews. In other words, if the film is bad, I just don't write a review most of the time, as the film makers are young and inexperienced and I don't want to be a total jerk. However, I am making an exception with MIDNIGHT SNACK because the film really irritated me because it had only a story idea (not a story) and was all silly special effects and blood.

The film starts with a guy in bed at night. He awakens and goes to get a snack, at which time a monster eats his throat. Then, his wife comes to the kitchen looking for him and has her throat eaten thanks to a cheesy monster. And that is IT!!! Nothing more, nothing less! Blood and a creepy mask along don't equate to a good film.

Well, it was a good idea...

A no-budget horror short about a man who goes downstairs for a midnight snack, leading us to wonder just what the snack will ultimately be.

The idea is clever, and the opening is OK, but the gore is very cheap and is filmed in a lackluster manner that takes out any of the suspense or atmosphere that could have overcome small time money.

The acting from the wife was also not very good.

The face mask of the monster reminds me of Ed Wood material.

They would have been better off filming in color, as the black and white didn't look real, nor was it believable as a homage.

This is probably the type of thing that would pop up in self-made Youtube videos today. And it would likely be better.

It's not the worst thing ever by any means. It's just sort of there. It's just that the idea could have led to far more than the result indicates.
