Weird and Intriguing
claudio_carvalho25 February 2007
In the Christmas Eve in the Styxx Club in Paris, the troublemaker Bart (Olivier Bartélémy) and his scum friends Thaï (Nicolas Le Phat Tan) and Ladj (Ladj Ly) meet the bartender Yasmine (Leïla Bekhti) and the costumer Eve (Roxane Mesquida), and after a fight of Bart in the nightclub, Eve invites the group to go to her house in the country. While in the road nearby the cottage, they are introduced by Eve to the weird shepherd and housekeeper Joseph (Vincent Cassel), whose wife is pregnant. Joseph feels a sort of attraction for Bart, and along the Christmas night, Joseph discloses his real intentions.

"Sheitan" is a weird and intriguing French horror movie, with an atmosphere of nightmare. The creepy and odd story has many points open to interpretations, very bizarre characters and situations, good performances of the cast and a gorgeous and sexy unknown French actress, Roxane Mesquida. I am not sure if I missed some point, since there are references to Eve, the serpent and the apple; Joseph and the new born child on the Christmas day. I liked this refreshing movie, in spite of the non-clear screenplay, but I do not dare to recommend it except for specific audiences. My vote is six.

Title (Brazil): "Satã" ("Satan")

Cabin Fever meets Delierance with a slice of France
nick-gibson1 August 2006
I saw Sheitan at the Melbourne International Film Festival and thoroughly enjoyed 26 year old Kim Chapitan's directorial debut.

Sheitan, meaning Satan in Persian, follows a group of 4 French kids on a roadtrip to an exotic vixen's country retreat on Christmas Eve. Upon arrival we greet the intoxicating local family who are a 'banjo shy of a Cahulawassee River ride', Deliverance style.

The buildup of tension is the film's greatest asset as we fall for the motley locals before all hell breaks loose in diabolical circumstances. There's enough lashings of nudity to titillate and a fantastic scene involving a placenta and the best use of SFX for a long time.

Great acting for a horror movie, including a superb performance by Vincent Cassell who proves he's as good as he is in front of the camera as he is behind it, a breathtaking performance by Roxane Mesquida and a blink and you'll miss it cameo by Monica Bellucci.

The art direction/ set design was perfect, the Provincial French manor where the kids end up is as beautiful as it is haunting. If clowns don't scare the hell out of me, dolls do, and Sheitan certainly pushes the right buttons whilst not resorting to 'Chucky' style offerings. A beautiful soundmix accompanies the pictures providing some of the best sound effects work seen for a fair while.

For a directorial debut, Chapiron is streets ahead of Eli Roth, again proving that the best horror directors aren't in Hollywood. As part of the emerging French group Kourtajme', Chapiron has greatly learned from some of his more famous contemporaries, namely Cassel.

So kudos to you Mr Chapiron. A few editing flaws stop me giving a higher score but a good 8 for a debut film is nothing to sneeze at, and announce yourself on the horror stage as a star of the future.

Odd, Disturbing and Entertaining
boyinflares10 November 2006
Unaware that this is a French film, I liked the sound of the premise, so when I put the DVD on was (pleasantly) surprised that it was in French, makes an interesting differentiation from the usual U.S. films of the genre.

"Sheitan" begins similarly to "Wolf Creek" in terms of a group of young adults just doing ordinary things, before the terror is unleashed upon them, so for some time it does not seem as though you are watching a horror / thriller - even though you know you are.

The film switches between ordinary (men and women wanting to hook up with each other), to plan bizarre (the arrival and subsequent "adventures" in the small town) to the shocking (everything that follows). Seriously, some of it is so absurd and it feels totally original.

The acting is very good. Vincent Cassel is unrecognisable as the creepy Joseph. Hottie Oliver Bartelemy is terrific as Bart, Roxane Mesquida is great as Eve, as is Leila Bekhti as Yasmine, and Nico Le Phat Tan as Thai and Ladj Ly as Ladj.

Some of the phrases that the young adults say seem a bit strange, but I don't know if that is because of poor translation (I can't speak French), but it did become a bit distracting at some points. Overall though, an odd, disturbing and highly entertaining film.

multi-level nasty that's worth more than a nod

Warning: Spoilers
Sheitan (three and a half stars)

Director Kim Chapiron Writer Christian Chapiron, Kim Chapiron Stars Vincent Cassel, Olivier Bartélémy, Roxane Mesquida, Nico Le Phat Tan, Leïla Bekhti, Ladj Ly, Julie-Marie Parmentier Certificate tbc Running time 94 minutes Country France Year 2006

Some French youngsters leave a nightclub (we get a glimpse of a record called Sheitan on the DJ decks) with one of them wounded after an argument with the bartender. A sexy young girl (that more than one of the boys in the group is after) suggests going to her place - a farmhouse in the countryside. They are broke, and steal food and petrol on the way. When they get there, it's daylight. They lark about in a field with some goats, including an iconic-looking black goat, before Housekeeper Joseph meets and greets them. So far we have little indication of what sort of movie we are getting into, beyond a few hints that the easily-offended should have left before their curfew.

Racist and sexist jokes went through a phase where it was unacceptable to use certain words, but then the award winning British TV show, The Office, pushed boundaries by making politically incorrect jokes in a self-conscious, squirming way. Suddenly it was OK for tell these gags if you simultaneously showed how offensive they were. Sheitan starts doing this with its 'Chink' and 'Camel Rider' references that many of the leading characters find odious. What else? Sex and horror? The standard Hammer-Horror formula of nubile women, sexual innuendo and scary monsters was frequently toned down when American slasher films put limits on the amount of sexuality. Not so in France. And why not? Images of sexual repression mesh well with frighteningly Freudian dreams and should be fair game for filmmakers.

I don't want to suggest that this gross-out film is high art - it's not - but it is refreshing to see a movie where the story has free rein to include any sort of repulsive symbolism, from a crazy, high libido woman getting sexual with a dog (when the human object of her desire rejects her advances), to an encounter with a Muslim women whose fears are given nasty vent in a practical joke involving large amounts of insects. A serious criticism of many horror movies is that women were more frequently portrayed as victims; while has some mileage, it is important to distinguish routine treatment of women-as-victims from graphic exploration of psychological themes. Fear of sex, compounded by fear of rape, or compounded (in either sex) by religious suppression of sexuality, are valid topics for the artist exploring these issues, and such examination may even further understanding on a deeper level.

Sheitan leads us into a dark and nasty story of satanism by something of the back door. We are confounded by familiar American-Pie -style pantie-sniffing humour and a wave of French, adrenalised joie-de-vivre, propelled at maniacal speed and an outstanding performance by Vincent Cassel as the grinning housekeeper. His character is a remarkable accomplishment. Offputting, looking a bit like the ugliest of the goats, but exuding a camaraderie and hospitality which the guests find hard to refuse, even when he suggests hot-spring skinny-dipping that challenges not only the youngsters sense of possession towards the girls with them, but their homophobia when the rather Pan-sexual (if you'll excuse the pun) Joseph teams up with one of the lads that seems (sexually) the weakest or least dominant of the group.

Arguments between the Christians, Muslims and atheists over dinner give Joseph the opening he needs to get the subject onto his favourite topic, while the give-away tip-offs in the name of his dog, the Chucky-like preparations of his pregnant nutter wife, and his getting all protective over basilisks should give an inkling of what might be to come. (This subtly hints at how the western-style Devil is a creation of religion, specifically Roman Catholicism.) The sight of the nauseating Joseph slobbering over his wife before she gives birth may have turned your stomach too much to pay attention, but Sheitan, for all its flaws, deserves to become a cult favourite.

The rather psychotic ending feels a bit of a mish-mash but, if you keep your eye on the girl at the centre of it all, you can make some kind (or various kinds) of sense of it. Sheitan is one of the cleverest late-night nasties of recent years and is worth more than the fast food you may vomit up if you have the temerity to eat first.

first movie of a talented french director
clemmonnier4 February 2006
an excellent movie, but I think it has been misunderstood for the most part because it's full of references from ancient short movies from the collective kourtrajmé. IT has to be taken with second and maybe third degrees it's so funny and it's maybe vincent cassel's best performance. "on va aux grottes chaudes" will become cult. thank you Kim for that refreshing movie, I know you will be great in the future. kourtrajmé is an idea which didn't exist in France and allows to discover an other facet of french humour. It's a friends movie but you can see all the fun of this movie. it's so easy to criticize an original movie when you can't understand it. I think the world wasn't ready for Sheitan but I hope it will be soon because it's a pearl.

SHEITAN (Kim Chapiron, 2006) **
Bunuel197614 April 2010
Co-producer Vincent Cassel gave his handsome star Vincent Cassel (son of the late international star Jean-Pierre) a chance to essay the colorful character role of the repulsive gardener Joseph. Watching him mugging about in a scruffy-haired, ugly-toothed make-up provides most of the fun that is to be had from this peculiar but largely disagreeable diabolical French horror flick; there is little I hate more than the sight of young people waving their arms around in that silly 'hip-hop' fashion and, unfortunately, there is a lot of that going on in the first half of the film…but I must say that watching Cassel's baffled reaction to it was very amusing! Anyhow, three youngsters (each of a distinct race and creed) get in trouble during a Christmas Eve on the town until a beautiful girl (Roxane Mesquida of 2001's FAT GIRL fame) they meet in a disco invites them to spend the night at her farm on the outskirts; there they meet Joseph, his equally unattractive and very pregnant wife, a mentally-challenged relative, the town slut and several of her lusty pretenders. While there is not much gore to be had during the 94-minute running-time, the film-makers decided to substitute that with some disgusting visuals instead: a free-for-all nude swim in the hot waters of a cave; Joseph licking his pregnant's wife tummy; the latter breaking water in the corridor at the climax; an all-important eye-gouging and, worst of all, a completely irrelevant flashback to one of the youngster's one-night stand with (again) an unattractive girl in a tent where her private regions are represented as a table replete with unappetizing food! The events depicted in the film could well be a nightmare being experienced by that same unlucky youngster after being beaten up at the discotheque…or the would-be Satanic rituals revolving around the birth of Cassel's child might really be happening – but, frankly, one never cares enough about any of the characters to spend much time afterwards on sorting it all out. For what it is worth, Cassel's real-life wife Monica Bellucci appears briefly as a female vampire in the black-and-white film-within-a-film being shown on TV at one point!

Hilarious with a side of gore
jennifer-25-96523130 July 2011
This movie was hilarious! I loved the characters in this film all with their own goofy, perverted and dumbass college aged personalities. It seemed to me that I laughed throughout most of the film but there was still enough gore and horror to keep me interested in the horror side of it.

Another thing I can say about this movie was there was a lot of "WTF!" moments. I also have to add that this movie has the nastiest description of a woman's private parts I have ever heard and still shake my head in disgust and amusement at it even days later.

I don't want to go into it too much but this movie has become high up on my list for movies I would recommend to people. It is politically incorrect and has constant references to racism, but its more to add to the uneducated hillbilly type character that plays in the movie.

If you haven't seen this, watch it. It is one of the funniest horror films I have ever seen.

Joseph is a Legend! ! !
ThreeSpoons8215 September 2006
I really enjoyed this film when I saw the showing at FrightFest '06. Although not a "great movie" in the traditional sense it is absolutely hilarious!

Take human traffic and add a splash of the family from House of a 1000 corpses and then you have this film! ! ! I can honestly say that this film is worth watching just for the relationship between Joseph and Bart. If you want to watch a film with some messed up characters and truly funny scenes with a horror undertone then watch this mad French movie!

P.s. Watch for the "Red Rocket" scene in the grotto, anyone that has seen South Park should get that ! ! !

I'd rather get my eyebrows waxed than having to re-watch this movie.

Warning: Spoilers
I continue my adventures in French inspired movies, by seeing this French Movie. You can't get more French-inspired than in France. I definitely feel like this movie put me through a roller-coaster and while I was leaving the park, it came out of nowhere and kicked me in the balls. The first twenty minutes or so I thought I was in a French remake of Stereo Future, minus the oxygen high.

So there's these 3 guys, like the three musketeers. One is Moroccan, one is Vietnamese and the weaselly one must have been the Frenchman. They meet these 3 girls at the club. They get together and this one girl, the tempting-if-you-like-that-kind-of-thing Roxane Mesquida, suggests they drive for hours and hours, into the middle of nowhere to her house. And can you believe this was all caused by one guy's insatiable sex drive?? OK, so the other 2 guys weren't exactly paddling in the opposite direction. At this point I was still intrigued, yet having a creeping suspicion that this was either going to go the way of Miike's Audition or the way of the Descent. It's funny, because it does neither. It goes completely in the opposite direction and then kicks you, again. While you are walking away in pain, it comes back and kicks you once more.

The departure signals the end of the beginning and the revealing of the true nature of the movie. It really wants to be a French version of the Wicker Man in the context of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And this is where you start to wonder about Occam's Razor and the possibility that this movie could recovery from a totally, out-of-control spiral towards Terra firma.

It doesn't. The movie had me when I thought it was a light affair and still had me when they were toying more with the love and less with killing. When the movie went towards crazy hillbillies, I was having flashbacks of the appropriate episode of the X Files, Jeffrey Dahmer and a H.P. Lovecraft story I once read (about a guy living in one of those isolated New England farmhouses - think of the introduction to Tales of the Darkside the series). By the end you are cursing the movie for making you watch, because there was a glimmer of hope and it managed to rope you in until the end.

Much like the character Thai, this movie blocks you on multiple fronts. The worst of it all is I don't think there was one death. They must have been saving money from the special effects and extras, to pay for the catered food. There were some assaults and body parts removed, but nothing you couldn't live without. I was further reminded of the similar results in Wolf Creek. At least that had carnage. Both movies were lengthy and took too long to develop. This movie was almost over before something happened. The extra night before X-Mas element should have opened the door for the original Black Christmas and Tales from the Crypt Santa episode. It was wasted as well. And again just like Thai, this movie will leave you unsatisfied and lying in a pool of your own blood. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and skip this one.

Lord don't forgive them for what they do
nogodnomasters15 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A group of young party adults at a disco decide to have a weekend after party at Eve's (Roxane Mesquida) country home. Bart (Olivier Barthelemy) is the obnoxious one in the group and doesn't fit in. At the home we meet Josef (Vincent Cassel) a half-wit caretaker who always has an idiot's smile on his face. He likes Bart. They have an interesting dinner and then...

At dinner we discover Sheitan means devil. There is a low level religious discussion and Josef explains what could be the plot, leaving out the creepy dolls. He keeps us engaged in the film, not knowing if he is the antagonist or protagonist considering the group. The group is supposed to be out partying on Christmas Eve, and then the next night at the manor is also Christmas Eve. I just went with it.

The film is in French with English or Spanish subtitles.

Oh come on
souillac-anna17 February 2006
So am I. I mean French. And if the Sheitan's movie does one thing, it is only confirming the lack of substance in French film-making of nowadays. It is poor on every level (script, acting and directing...) It just surfs on the cool wave of "the trashier the better." It sadly mixes the worst bit of old forgotten cinematographic genres (gore and B movies...) and pretends to create something new. It is neither frightening nor funny, although we could assert that the result is tragic. It seems to me that this bunch of "sons of..." (most of the cast and crew are kids of confirmed artists) had some money to play with and nothing else. Sheitan is different from what we see in general. But different doesn't, alas, necessarily means newer or better... And please, forget about that comment about how you should know the typical french urban and country people to understand that movie. Considering the way they're described, it is offensive to both of them.

Of course that is just a point of view...

Truly different story with a horrific ending.
massaster76017 December 2006
If you took the movies The Devil's Rejects, The Hills Have Eyes, Rosemary's Baby, and Psycho, and then stuck them in a blender, your end result just might be Sheitan, the second film from French Director Kim Chapiron.

The film revolves mostly around three men, who after a night of partying at the local discotheque, meet up with a young girl named Eve. Eve encourages the three friends (plus a girlfriend of the three men) to come to the countryside, to stay at her house. Shortly before arriving at the house the characters meet up with Joseph, the supremely creepy housekeeper to the rundown manor (played by French actor Vincent Cassel), where Eve lives. A very minimalist plot, but if this were a Hollywood movie, the housekeeper would have brutally murdered the guests one by one, and this would have been your run of the mill slasher flick.. But this is not a Hollywood movie, and it's not a slasher flick, and this is what makes Sheitan so refreshingly different. The film instead elects to take the viewer on a different path, which turns out to be infinitely more disturbing. Instead of becoming a blood bath, Sheitan starts out quite normally, but at the same time the viewer is left with the thought in the back of their head, "What is wrong with these people." From then on the film seamlessly balances black humor with a genuine creepiness, which continues up to the very end, and then brace yourself. The film closes with an extremely disturbing 15 minutes or so, of family dysfunction on a grand level.

The acting isn't especially well done, but is adequate for the story. The cinematography is pretty straight forward and typical, although the opening features some Mtv inspired, fast paced camera work, but the film still works well regardless of these two-weaknesses.

The only real weakness the film has, is as the credits roll, the viewer is still left with a lot of un-answered questions. Don't get me wrong, some of my favorite films have open-ended conclusions, but in Sheitan, some of the unanswered questions involve major plot points, and undoubtedly some viewers will be frustrated by this.

All in all, the film works quite well. If you're a fun of twisted, strange, disturbing movies, Sheitan is for you, if demented films aren't your thing avoid it, and go rent Bambi instead.

My rating 8 out of 10. (Truly different story, with a horrific ending, but too much Ambiguity )

Smart and intriguing Satanic horror!
The_Void8 October 2008
The French have pretty much proved themselves to be the kings of modern horror cinema over the course of this decade. Films such as Malefique, In My Skin and Inside show what the French can do; and as a result of these films, I generally go into any modern French horror expecting great things. Sheitan is yet another excellent French horror film that works thanks to its untypical approach, mysterious atmosphere and great lead performance by Vincent Cassel. The plot focuses on a group of friends that exit a disco late one night after a fight that resulted in one of them taking a bottle in the face. They hook up with a girl called Eve; who suggests that they escape to her house in the country. They get to the farmhouse and are greeted by a bunch of goats and the strange housekeeper, who takes a strange sort of liking to one of the boys. The group enjoys themselves at the house and spend most of their time trying to get the girls into bed; but soon it becomes apparent that something is wrong with the housekeeper...

The way that the plot moves really is the best thing about this film. It's all held together very loosely and the plot itself has free reign basically to go wherever it wants; and this results in a film that constantly feels fresh and inventive as you never really know where it is going to go next. The film relies on its characters to move the story forward and they are a colourful bunch; the housekeeper and the boy he 'befriends' in particular share an interesting relationship. The way that the film plays out is very strange for a Satanic horror film as despite some symbolism and discussions of religion during the film; there's not a great deal in the way of hints that the film even is Satanic horror. Vincent Cassel's character is the real standout of the film in terms of the performances; and he truly succeeds in creating an extremely intriguing horror villain that is interesting and detestable in equal measures. The film does begin to crumble somewhat towards the end and I was really worried that we were going to get a Switchblade Romance-style cop out ending, but luckily it gets corrected in time and the conclusion is a shocker. Overall, Sheitan is an excellent movie and one that will surely improve with subsequent viewings. Recommended!

Sick, annoying trash
patrick-green13 December 2006
Yeahy, well. The french people expected so much of it and it was very disappointing. It is a very overrated film: the critics claimed it "gave a welcome surge of energy to a tired french film industry", well, the french film industry must be knackered to claim that Sheitan was an epic film. The plot of the film is confusing and pointless: a bunch of clueless youngsters escape from a disco and go off to the countryside(?)to spend the weekend there or something(I'm not sure why they went to some lost part of the french countryside after coming out of a disco so I'm making theories)there they meet with an inbred prehistoric man farmer thing that grins a lot and a community of inbred, decadent country dwellers who look like they were beaten up with anvils. The youngsters then hole up in a luxurious(and rather mouldy) château with a freaky collection of dolls in one room. The plot then degenerates into chaos and oblivion as the young 'uns clash with the local community and their devil-worshipping farmer friend. The film does manage to be pretty funny at times with a hilarious rap clip(look for it if you happen to watch the film). Things I learned from this movie: Party-crashing youngsters often escape to the countryside to sober up after a night at the disco. Inbred, decadent farmers possess the same strength as the Incredible Hulk. Devil-worshipping is a common practice in backward villages. Dogs will come back to life after having their intestines ripped out. Unfinished dolls are very scary. Inbred, monstrous farmers are as hard to kill as a cockroach and can survive being run over by a car with only minor injuries. Pursuing a couple of inbred deformed country adolescents on a moped is not advisable.

Cassel to the rescue!!!
ElijahCSkuggs21 August 2008
Here we are.

A group of horny idiots travel to a remote farmhouse in France because one of their friends, well, two of their friends want to screw some sexy chick.

That's the premise.

But what happens when they get there, and who they meet, is what inevitably saves this film from complete and utter toilet flop.

Vincent Cassel is the film's savior as he steals every single scene he is in.

There are a couple okay parts, as the film is pretty sexual, but a scene in an underground spring is strangely erotic - well, for me I guess – and it manages to show just how bizarre this family and community is.

But, it's not bloody, or scary, and it is a couple steps away from being garbage. So if you get a chance, make sure to thank your lucky stars that Vincent Cassel decided to steer this film into cult status.

Lontrajmé
brooz13 December 2010
Did you see some references to Kourtrajmé in this movie? Because this movie is filled with that. 1st things 1st: What is Kourtrajmé. In french slang it means "short film". Kourtrajmé is a collective of street performers whose main concern are anti racism, playing with symbols, and having fun. Incorrect fun, that is: they play on fear of unknown and violence. Their main medium is unsurprisingly short film and music clips. From now on Kourtrajmé will be written as K for short. I ll list below all the references to K I found in this movie.

Kim Chapiron, director, is from K. Thai is played By Nico Le Phat. He is a director from K. Mainly for clips. Barth (Olivier Barthelemy) can be seen on many clips from Romain Gavras, also from K. Ladj (Ladj Ly) is a director from K. Responsible for a famous (in France) fake documentary about hash pushers: Gofast connexion.

The initial sentence, "God, don't pity them for they know what they do" is a recurring sentence from K. They usually aim it at politician who play hate-mongers and leave suburbs grow with poverty and violence. In the opening scene, the DJ (played by Mouloud, a friend of K, as all(?) the actors) wears a K Tshirt. On his mix table is a picture of a guy missing a tooth; he is Mohamed Mazouz, AKA HiTekk from La Caution, affiliated to K.

At some point, Mouloud yells "Batards de barbares". It is the name of the clip watched by Barth, Eve and Thai. Check out for the soul rewrite by Mai Lan "Je t immole gentiment" (I immolate you kindly) with the crudest/grossest lyrics ever("I dig your grandma s grave and ra*e her and if u r not happy with it I ra*e your dad too")

At some point their car is blocked by a pack of goats. Then Barth takes the billy-goats goatee and starts singing "par la barbichette". It is a french kiddie song/game in which both players hold the other s chin. The first to laugh gets a slap. "La barbichette" also is another short from Kim Chapiron in which Barthelemy and Cassel use this game to determine who is gonna help mum.

In fact, the all film plays with our fears of the unknown: either the gangster style of the heroes, or the creepiness/racism of countryside people. Hence, this flick explores all the clichés of these groups.

you might want to see more from K. then surf kourtrajme dot com

Entirely unnecessary
alisonjeastman28 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I can find nothing good about this movie aside from the fact that I did not turn it off. But I tend not to turn movies off simply on principal.

The directing was straight from 8th grade video production class with Mr. Pumpitus, the dialogue was insulting at best, there were no likable characters (so much so that it was disappointing that none of them died), and the plot has been recycled so much that it is now full of holes.

I suppose the one star is for something that I have never seen before: a woman giving a dog a hand job.

Do not dignify this movie by paying to watch it.

Cassel almosts saves the weak story
billcr127 August 2011
Sheitan is a French horror film that really doesn't go anywhere or provide many scary moments. Vincent Cassel is unrecognizable as the lead villain Joseph; he's sufficiently menacing but the weak script is well below his acting talents. Cassel was the dance director in last years much hyped and overrated Black Swan. Here he scowls and physically abuses most of the cast throughout this scare fest.

On the positive side, Roxane Mesquida provides eye candy(as she did in the horror- parody Rubber recently). As the temptress Eve she has brought a few bar patrons to her family's rural farm for a supposed romantic getaway. Of course things don't turn out as planned for the prospective soul mates. Ms. Mesquida does have an all to brief nude scene with 2 guys.

The movie only runs an hour and a half, so if you're a horror fan, this is very middle of the road with some better and some worse in this genre. The two aforementioned leads make the ride marginally passable.

Monsieur Cassel... What the hell were you thinking???
nmlal6828 December 2009
Oh dear. I know democracy is good, is something positive even if not perfect. Nevertheless, when I see here all the shinning comments about this abnormal movie I just want to putsh over IMDb and play Pinochet for a while until all those stars are wiped out for good.

Cassel, Cassel, Cassel... not even your genius, not even your brilliant performance can save this aberration. Why to take part in such a stupid project? Please, I want to know why??? I demand to know!

Absolutely below all B movie standards. They probably thought "let's mix Cassel with some pretty faces and asses and with some crazy directing moves and we got ourselves a movie". Instead, what Kim Chapiron got was something to throw in the nearest trash bin. What he got was a complete failure, a mess without plot, without actors, without ideas, without consistence. What he did was to copy the traditional teen horror movie already seen ten thousand times before, arrange some fancy scenarios with lots of dolls, kidnap Bellucci until Cassel agreed to jump into the project and VOILÁ! You got yourself the bullshit movie of the year.

Avoid this movie with all your strengths, even if you adore Cassel, like me.

Stylish French horror lacking the real horror
Shattered_Wake13 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Kicked out of Styxx nightclub in Paris, a group of young men & women head to the country for a new place to party away Christmas Eve. There, they meet a strange (VERY strange) shepherd who is setting up for a Satanic ritual to bring the devil's seed into the world (which came about from some good ol' fashioned backwoods incest).

Although I would've preferred a more serious Frontière(s)-like approach to a film like this that would've resulted in a brutally serious movie, the fact that it was more of a comedy actually wasn't too bad. With as vicious as some of the more popular French horrors have been recently, a little humour can go a long way. I mean, when Vincent Cassel's character, Joseph, was asking Bart to hop on his shoulders to play Water Chicken. . . it was probably the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. Actually, anytime Joseph (in either gender) opened his mouth, it was pretty hilarious. But, unfortunately. . . he was the only thing that kept this film from being a total mess. Probably the most obvious problem I had with it was the fact that there was almost NO horror (or even thriller) action for the entire first hour or more of the film. It was mostly character development, which was unnecessary as all of the characters were pretty one-dimensional. Luckily, however, when the brief (like '20 minutes out of an hour and a half' kinda brief) chunk of horror actually begins, it is fairly violent and a little bit disgusting. But, again, it was not enough to save the film. The story was, well, strange. . . but original, at least. As the story headed towards the convoluted ending, it kind of lost it for me. Beyond that, there's nothing much else to say about this film other than. . . well, it just didn't feel worth the time to me.

Final verdict: 6/10. Rather disappointing.

Vive La France!

Only worth watching because of Vincent Cassel
chrichtonsworld25 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
After reading comments on the forum about this movie on this site I felt compelled to react. I am always amazed how some people always make more of a movie than it actually is. Of course it is obvious that this movie is about the devil or devilish acts. Some reviewers talk about references to short movies and about symbolism. I doubt that there are many viewers who actually have seen these movies. If this truly was the director's intention than I think that he is asking too much of the viewer. And I must admit that there is some symbolism but is not very clear. For that to work properly you have to repeat certain symbols in order to raise attention. And I did get the most obvious one, namely the title. The title is Sheitan (Satan). You can't get any clearer than that. The plot is not difficult or confusing. But it tries to be. Unfortunately there simply isn't much to it. And if for some reason you didn't get the meaning of the title and what the film is trying to make you understand it all gets explained when Joseph (Vincent Cassel) tells the story about a man who made a deal with the devil. Guess what? He is the man who made the deal. Take a good look at Maria, his wife. She looks like Vincent Cassel and in fact is Vincent Cassel (not Georgette Crochon, that person doesn't exist, meant as a joke I think or to trick the more curious viewer). Suggesting that Maria is his sister. What was the director trying to do? This movie isn't scary or thrilling! Well, there are some funny scenes but overall this movie is not very interesting or at least entertaining. The characters who are very important are not likable at all. I didn't care for them and I sure didn't mind if they get hurt or killed. BTW that is one of my main issues I have with bad horror titles. If you are not going to deliver horror goodness so to say then at least bring something else to the table to draw me by for example making me care about the characters. The only redeeming factor is Vicent Cassel. He alone should be the reason to consider watching Sheitan. The promise of a wonderful climax that never comes and the failure to offer some nice entertainment make this a movie to be missed.

I do have to add that Vincent Cassel did this project because of his increasing involvement with Kourtrajmé. A collective hell-bent on making video shorts by any means possible. "They are of that generation that says, 'I've got a camera and a computer, I don't need any money to do what I want to do,'" says Cassel. "They shoot, edit, shoot, edit. Then they give it away for free."( Cited from article Rebel rebel: Why Vincent Cassel is Europe's most dangerous movie star.)

amazingly, this unheralded little movie is the scariest and funniest film of the year - and, perhaps, the best
cudas24 April 2006
French shocker Sheitan is, against all odds and expectations, some kind of demented - and utterly disreputable - masterpiece: the scariest, most uninhibited movie of the year, and also perhaps the funniest.

It's by some way the best picture I've seen since A History of Violence: I was really blown away by its punkish energy, unpredictability and confidence; most of all, I loved the way director Kim Chapiron (who I'd never heard of before) mixes horror and humour. So many movies try that balancing-act and come a cropper: Chapiron makes it look easy. She (or is it a he?) also puts the wildly overpraised Haut Tension and Calvaire very firmly in their place: Sheitan resembles both pictures in many ways, but is much their superior in terms of ambition, execution and sheer balls-to-the-wall chutzpah.

It's a picture I knew nothing about before arriving in Amsterdam (for the Fantastic Film Festival) and spotting it in the catalogue: the presence in the cast of Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci caught my eye, but I went in fearing the worst - anticipated a flashily hollow exercise in exploitational style a la Jan Kounen's dire Dobermann (Kounen is, as it turns out, thanked in the end credits), reckoned I might well exit after 30 minutes if it didn't grab my attention. New after five minutes I was going to be in my seat for the duration: hyperkinetic nightclub opening sets the tone/pace/look (much hand-held camera-work, rapidfire editing, up-close-and-personal shots of the youthful protagonists).

Main characters are three pals of varying degrees of boorishness: Olivier Barthelemy as knucklehead Bart, who rapidly gets into a daft dancefloor fight and is smashed over the head with a wine bottle; Ladj Ly and Nicolas Le Phat Tan as Thai - this latter pair relatively sensible and restrained in comparison with their lecherous, thuggish mate. When Bart is ejected from the premises, the trio head off (at reckless speed) in Ladj's car, along with barmaid Yasmine (Leila Bekhti) and another copine, Eve (Roxane Mesquida). After careering through the city streets, the five (accompanied by Bart's dog Tyson) head for the countryside and the farmhouse where Eve's parents supposedly reside. No sign of the folks: instead it's maniacally grinning farmhand/housekeeper Joseph (a near-unrecognisable Vincent Cassel) who provides an extremely hearty welcome. It doesn't take too long for all hell to break loose - perhaps literally, 'Sheitan' being the Persian word for Satan...

Like most of the best films, the less you know about Sheitan beforehand, the better: and any synopsis can't really hope to capture what makes the picture so exhilaratingly effective. Best seen in a crowded cinema - ideally after a drink or two - this is a genuinely disturbing, genuinely hilarious rock-the-house crowdpleaser. Too extreme and jittery for some, no doubt - but how terrific it is to stumble across a film bursting with so much wildness and life. A no-holds-barred rural Gothic: touches of Jeepers Creepers here and there, a bit of Cabin Fever - with Barthelemy's Bart a Gallic cousin of James DeBello's pricelessly doltish Bert from the latter.

And while Chapiron's direction and script (co-written with Christian Chapiron) are, of course, crucial, special mention must be made of Barthelemy, without whom Sheitan might not even work at all. His performance as the hapless Bart - whose sullen idiocy is punished in truly extravagant style - represents astonishing work. Bart is notably unintelligent, relentlessly unsympathetic: unredeemed and very probably unredeemable - a considerable challenge for any actor, never mind one making his first feature-film. But in Barthelemy's hands he becomes a compelling, utterly convincing three-dimensional creation - a startling intrusion of cloddish reality into what is otherwise a mind-bending journey into the surreal and the grotesque.

Great characters, so why follow the formula?
megaruda28 October 2013
The movie is alright, it is entertaining mostly but not in an overdone clichéd way. The characters are clearly defined unlike many horror movies where they just throw a bunch of archetypes in a mix and people start dying. It is not a thriller but it ends up like one, in the Dumbest way possible. They could of created something new and with no precedents, instead they decided to go for the obvious just so we could see Vincent Cassel more time on screen.

There is not much wrong with the movie technically, it was an interesting attempt, but the ending made seem ¨House of the Devil¨ like a good movie, some of the characters make good decisions, but then they just throw it all away and kill the cutest one, not enough gore, not enough comedy, not enough suspense, not enough anything, good character development in a bad story which does makes sense but tries too hard and uses a very cheap resort for the ending to fit in.

A ferocious film, not excellent but still very catchy
denis8884 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Well, you have to admit, such films could have never appeared in the USA. Only in Europe can such a ferocious, a sheer movie appear. Well, if you still are in doubt tell me if you can easily recollect any recent American movie with so much full frontal male nudity, with the goat's milking scene and so terrifying horror scenes? The plot is quite simple, and it tells about a young men's company going out to the country with two accidental girls in order to have some fun and so on. The sheer horror starts to build up when they all arrive to a large old house. The scenes of horror are so realistic that if you suffer weak nerves, never watch them. All those birth scenes, goggling eyes, blood are so frightening that you have to make a pause and catch a breath for a moment. Bad thing is that this film sees no boundaries - so much blood, so much open violence that there is really off the limit. Anyway, Mr. Kassel is as usual excellent in his delivery and his big rotten yellow teeth in the film are in fact the most disgusting thing. Watch it, but do not allow your kids to do it too.
