Screen test for a future role?
cpotato101022 August 2023
Listening to Anthony D. Call (Toby) in his last argument with John Dehner (Robert McGill) before they choose to go out for dinner, you can hear the same intensity in his voice as later during his "End of watch" outburst in the Star Trek episode The Corbomite Maneuver (1966).

I wonder if, when casting the role of "Lt. Dave Bailey" someone remembered Anthony D. Call in this show.

The speech by Arthur Franz (Lt. Rudy) when he was arresting Hampton Fancher (Leonard North) is another high point. As is much of his role, playing a "Joe Friday" type police officer, but not quite as brusque, and with more humor. Of course, I had seen Arthur Franz previously in many different roles, so this is no surprise. Glad to add this outing to the list.

What was a bit of a surprise is the performance by John Dehner. I have seen him in many other roles as well, so I know he could do better. It may be that he was not well-directed, he seemed very uncomfortable in the role of "Robert McGill".

In a bit of a contrast, the smaller part of Rachel Ames (Agnes Hoyt) was very well done. I don't have time to do the research, but she had many TV guest roles before General Hospital (1963), and I wonder if any of them paired her with John Dehner.

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** Kookie and J.R. in Newport beach during spring break. what could go wrong? Well, a lot when you think of it; including a pretty girl's car being stolen, and then she being hit by same when she tried to stop the thieves. Our heroes are right there, and Kookie works with the local police to find the guys. They do, and in the doing the "good" bad kid is saved, and the "bad" bad kid is not; I think. It's still undecided. The girl lives, and appears to forgive the fool, but she's not prosecuting the case, the D.A.is.

If I was the kid's (GOOD bad kid, that is), lawyer, the first thing I'd do is get his testimony on record with the D.A., go state's witness against his so-called buddy, get daddy to make amends, and make the kid join the Army. He's got some college, so the aptitude exams should get him in a cushy spot; being an only son, he'll probably go to Germany or some other easy berth (compared to Vietnam, which hadn't yet amplified it's gory presence). He can get out, G.I. Bill, finish college, and have a life, IF he doesn't screw up again.

His dirtbag buddy who got him in the trouble? Probably Chino State. Yeah, he's gonna be sold down the river. Just one more stopping point on the way to San Quentin. He almost succeeded in starting trouble during his arrest, and with both the girl's and "good-bad kid's" testimony, it's so long easy pickins and hello hard labor. Will he learn something? Doubtful; chances of a rich, full life in the American dream? You and I both know that a guy who caused the near death of that girl and didn't care is headed for a short life of crime. Kookie was doing some good pick-up investigative work, J.R. was a useless pretty boy (as usual), and the whole thing seemed like a sunny version of Dragnet.

Where it's always spring break
bkoganbing2 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
It's the younger generation of Bailey&Spencer taking over this episode when after some business in Balboa both Kookie and J.R. decide to party in a place where apparently it's always spring break.

They try to pick up two girls Pamela Austin and Mikki Jameson and both wish they had gone with them after Austin is run down by two kids in a stolen car.

The two perpetrators are Anthony Call and Hampton Fancher and Call has some daddy issues as he's spotted his rich father cavorting with a woman from the office.

The junior operatives of Bailey&Spencer aid law enforcement in tracking down the hit and run drivers of a stolen car. You'll have to see whether they get the girls or not.
