Airwolf - Santini's Millions
Scarecrow-8819 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
John Ireland co-stars as the "richest man in the world", CEO of a major tech company, who has his plane go down after "mechanical failure", lucky enough to be picked up by Santini who was operating Airwolf, transporting a heart to Chicago for a teenager-in-need. Ireland's Carl Barron has been a selfish, cold employer and grandfather, leaving his granddaughter, Margo (Lory Walsh), in charge of the company when an explosion inside his lab reports him dead. Updating his will before the lab explosion, Carl leaves 40% of the company to Santini, the other 60% to Margo, much to surprise and frustration of James Braydon (Jared Martin; War of the Worlds: The Series), company big shot with heavy influence on the board members who operate it. With Margo and Santini in control, Braydon sees fit to send his head henchman, Cooper (Joseph Ruskin; probably recognizable by Twilight Zone fans as the genie in the episode, "The Man in the Bottle") to try and cause Santini's helicopter to crash during a photo shoot for a film director, with both Braydon and Cooper later trapping Santini, String, and their painter inside a building with paint thinner smoking them. And then when Carl emerges alive, taking Margo to a disclosed location, Braydon and Cooper decide to hop in their weaponized chopper (with two others joining them in the air) to take them out...thanks to Caitlin, String and Santini will be able to escape the building before the paint thinner and an electrical hose designed by Cooper to blow them up do them harm. Caitlin is often quite the plot device but I prefer when she is used for more than just a dialogue scene here and there, a charming smile and humane comment that makes her endearing, and either a victim of circumstance or rescuer-in-the-nick-of-time. But primarily that is what Caitlin is often used as: sparingly, Caitlin is in jeopardy or finds her guys in trouble, arriving to help them out or needing their assistance. I prefer her to be a vital part of the plot, but the series does seem to use her in the second season as a supporting piece rather than incorporate her significantly in the stories. ArchAngel, though, isn't used much more effectively, so it all depends on the story. "Santini's Millions" once again calls attention to Santini's good heart (and horny responses to the ladies which might make certain viewers cringe) when he sees fit to take to task Braydon and their use of Carl's funds, especially how burdened the taxpayers are through questionable business practices. Santini has a good heart-to-heart with Margo about the company and her ability to run it due to her ethics and strong moral standing. Braydon is the corrupt suit-and-tie with very little patience for any challenges towards how he runs (or wishes to run) the business...so in order to silence his critics, the use of souped-up choppers is Braydon's strategy. Carl and Margo come together, Braydon and Cooper eventually encounter Airwolf and their doom, and the business will continue to thrive in Margo's capable hands. String isn't as much a major plot focus this go-around, but he doesn't always have to be...sometimes Santini should get the nod. But the old man ogling scantily clad "dolls" (his words) while on movie sets will no doubt ruffle feathers. ArchAngel's troubles with political suits demanding answers on whether Airwolf exists come to the fray after Carl mentions Santini's rescue of him in a mechanical breakthrough, particularly when the trip to Chicago and then to LA happens in quick time, gaining some unneeded publicity. Santini calling Carl into question for his throwing a cash price at him to delay the heart transfer so he could get back to LA sets off the entire episodic plot, with ArchAngel laughing aloud at the though of Santini being granted millions. Santini's landing a circling helicopter in a spiral while the director panics is a highlight.
