Serious subject done well

How could Edith possibly keep it from Archie? Such a somber subject. The whole cast's acting skills really shined. Each and everyone of them. Wasn't looking forward to this episode. But, turned out to be very good.

Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #34

In the days leading up to Xmas, Edith finds a lump in her breast, but wants to keep the news from Archie.

Jean Stapleton is obviously the MVP here. The best scene is when she is talking to Irene (Betty Garrett) who admits she herself has had a mastectomy and Edith's eyes instinctively wander to Irene's bust before she tries to avert them. When Archie enters the kitchen, Edith blurts "Dummy up!" to big applause.

In the hospital scene, the nurse is played by Katherine MacGregor (Mrs. Oleson on LITTLE HOUSE OF THE PRAIRIE) although the credits refer to her as "Scottie" MacGregor.

This is another decent but not excellent episode. The bit with the Groucho Marx glasses was overdone IMO and the bit with Archie and Mike getting stuck in the doorway was beneath this series. 7/10.

My favorite of the series Christmas episodes

It's Christmastime and Edith has to have a test for breast cancer.

This is another example of the brilliant way the writers can mix comedy and serious issues. It begins with Gloria and Frank Lorenzo (his last appearance) discussing Christmas and women's lib.(He tells her there would be no Christmas without the Virgin Mary). Then a funny sequence with Mike and Groucho Marx type disguises. The final scene is another one of the best in the series as Edith tells Archie that she does not have cancer but broke her ankle when she was so happy that she jumped off the operating table! A nice tender moment between the two ends the show.
