Archie comes through
vitoscotti28 November 2021
A very funny, quick paced episode. Rob Reiner did a very believable role of his pain. Funniest scene is when the ice bag slips. Sally Struthers has a lot of funny lines. She is a highlight of the episode with her making points, comedy, and beauty.

The issue of if any Bunkers have health insurance is curious. We know Mike doesn't. But possibly even Archie and Edith don't. $350 even in '72 seems too cheap for an operation and couple day hospital stay.

Dr Pending appendix

Warning: Spoilers
This was a unique episode in the fact that I actually appreciated Archie he actually done the right thing by paying for the operation and it shows that despite what he says to Mike and how he insults Mike and his polish heritage he generally cares for Mike because he means something to his daughter as such I thought this episode was not only well written and pretty damn funny but it developed Archie's character more I also find it hilarious how Archie folks out the extra for Doctor McKenzie because he doesn't want his son-in-law to have surgery under a female practitioner Doctor McKenzie is female anyway and so they paid the extra $200 for nothing.

Gloria had a big part in this episode which is great because she is a well-founded character that rarely gets the go ahead to do anything significant to affect the plot this being an exception.

Gloria is relevant for once

As you may or may not know, I'm not normally a huge fan of Gloria's character(Sally Struthers), as I don't think she adds much of consequence. For this episode, I felt she had more of an impact, and offered better lines than usual. The story has Mike needing to have his appendix removed, but the surgery will be pricey, unless he decides to have a female doctor(Gloria knows of her)do it for much cheaper. It isn't the funniest episode they ever had, but it's entertaining, especially having Archie tell us how much better men doctors are than woman doctors; after all, he wouldn't want a "nervous dame" messing around with male parts. I'll try not to give away the surprise ending, but this was one of Ann Summers'(actress)final roles, as she died 2 years later. Gloria and her dad have a few nice conversations, as he agreed to pay for the operation. This is a pretty episode, but it probably won't go down as one of your favorites.
