Betty's friend...say no more.
planktonrules7 August 2021
When the story begins, Betty is taking Barnaby and Jedediah to meet a wonderful man she just met on her cruise. However, when they arrive at his place, Lt. Biddle is there...as there's been a murder...and it's apparently Betty's new boyfriend!! But when Betty sees a glimpse of the body, she's shocked and goes for a closer look....because it's NOT him!! What follows is a confusing story of Latin American secret police and revolutionaries vying for power by getting a hold of some list....but what list and what of the boyfriend?!

If it wasn't for the fact that this was yet ANOTHER friend of Betty episodes (a WAY overused plot point...making it a cliche), it would be a pretty decent episode. Not brilliant stuff but apart from the Betty angle pretty unique.

Ah. The "Betty" episodes.

I like 60- 70's detective shows. I know they are campy at times and sometimes simply silly but there is charm about them. Except when they start to fall into predictable patterns that they use over and over even worse is when they are just simply poorly conceived and orchestrated. Whenever a BJ episode starts with Betty as star you know it's going to be be poorly done and in a hectic form. " oh Betty has. Friend coming, oh no that friend has died " opening this case the 2nd most over used "Betty met a fella, oh wait that fella is...." Starts off getting off the boat with a red jacket and slacks and very excited to introduce Her whole family immediately to a fella she met on said boat. "Hi lover Here's my whole family, aren't you happy to see us? Wanna get married? It's me, Manic Betty!!!" Also having Her "Luggage " delivered to Her apartment.... (Just how much does an office secretary make at a PI firm?) Especially one who than wears the same outfit she wore on the aforementioned boat trip all episode instead of what I assume most would do. Change? Show some passage of time? At least give the appearance She "Cleaned Up" after such a trip? Nope off the boat and immediately starts "Detecting". Then we are exposed to the frantic stylings of Betty life of running around half cocked , confronting wives, knowing where people are at any given time (Los Angeles must appear to be a very small town to people who never been, getting around is so easy since boats dock in Long Beach and the drive to LA proper can take over an hour then she's everywhere etc..still no cleaning up ) long drawn out scenes, ( detecting at a pace so quick that it's a wonder we need the internet now to do things) and then the rushed conclusion. Alas these are throw away episodes back when series meant 26 episodes and obviously out of ideas for the season. This character is single for obvious reasons.
