Is it true? Could Conrad Janis be playing an evil man?!

"The Picture Pirates" is a very timely episode for 1978...as well as for today. With the introduction of home videocassettes in 1975-76 (then Betamax and VHS were brought out), pirated movies were sometimes being illegally distributed BEFORE films were released in theaters....a practice that still goes on today. In fact, the problem is a bigger problem now than it was in the 1970s.

When the story begins, a film producer realizes his new unreleased movie was snuck out of the studio by one of his employees and he gives chase. However, the employee is working for some VERY dangerous types...and there are millions to be made selling pirated copies of the film. And, not surprisingly, the producer is killed when he confronts them! As a result, Barnaby enters the scene.

All in all, this is a very original story and one that holds up well. And, fortunately, this story is NOT about Betty or Jedediah's friends...like too many prior episodes.

"The Picture Pirates" was perhaps one of the earliest fictional TV eps to focus on video piracy in "Barnaby Jones"

In this ep, Barnaby Jones gets mixed up in the film piracy business when a veteran film editor gets an unfortunate accident involving such unsavory types. One of whom is played by Conrad Janis who during this season was a regular during the first year of "Mork & Mindy" playing Mindy's father. In this ep, he's one of the people being announced in the beginning credits as one of the guest stars but on a "Cannon" ep from a few years before, he was one of the smaller players in the end ones. Anyway, this was one of a few eps Buddy Ebsen was front-and-center as opposed to staying in the background for Lee Meriwether or Mark Shera as he wanted reduced screen time by this period. Anyway, a very entertaining and timely ep for this era, that's for sure!
