This is one of those episode you will remember long after viewing

From Part one we learned that a large forest fire is now heading for Stockton. After a crew, going to build a fire break, has their load of nitroglycerin explode on them, the Barkley boys have volunteered to take the nitro to try to save the town.

In the mean time Jarrod Heath and Nick all have small fires on their own in the form of women that they will try to put out before making the trip. This will prove to take up half the show before the boys finally get started on their dangerous trip up the mountain to form a break.

The rest of the show is classic 'Big Valley' with Jarrod, Nick and Heath playing their characters as expected, which is always a joy to watch. this is one of those episodes that you will remember the rest of your life. An interesting story with excellent acting.

Only the Barkley boys can stop the fire

An expedition led by Stu Erwin from part one of this story never makes it to the forest fire. Now the Barkley boys all three of them including lawyer Jarrod are taking a load of nitroglycerin and black powder to the forest fire to create a fire break. Per what happened to Erwin in part one that nitroglycerin is mighty unstable stuff.

The last half of this show is mostly Richard Long, Peter Breck, and Lee Majors in one of the few times in The Big Valley series that they work in concert because usually the story line focuses on one member of the family. It's what makes this second part really special.

Barbara Stanwyck also has an outstanding scene with Linda Evans and with butler Napoleon Whiting when she learns what the Barkley boys are up to. But as she remarks they're not boys, they're men doing a job that has to be done. It's so well played one of her best small screen scenes from this big screen legend.

A great episode from The Big Valley, a must for fans of the series.

The first installment is the most interesting.

Warning: Spoilers
Three men taking nitro to fight a forest fire are killed when it blows up. Stockton is threatened by the fire, and the three Barkley men are the only ones who will try the nitro trip this time. So, they hide the fact from their mother (bad idea to hide anything from Victoria), roping Silas into lying for them (terrific scenes for Napoleon Whiting for a change, especially when Victoria catches him in the lie), and the brothers go off in a reconstructed hearse toward the fire.

The first installment is more interesting than the second. It involves each of the Barkley men getting involved with a woman - Nick because he reaalllly wants to (it doesn't work because it turns out she will do anything he wants to get him to take the nitro out to fight the fire); Jarrod because the girl who was to marry one of the men already killed desperately wants money to get out of working in a saloon (and she'll do anything he wants to get it); Heath because an evangelist girl in town thinks she is a coward and failure to her family, long dead, and he saves her from an attack by a couple low-lives (and she'll do anything to get over her guilt feelings about her family).

The second installment gets a bit hackneyed. The men fight problems on the way to the fire. They get to the fire to have the girl Heath's involved with show up there too to prove her bravery. A fallen tree pins Heath in the way of the flames. Nothing different from any other western forest fighting episode or particularly interesting either.
