Candy's early life is revealed in this nice western story.

Ben, Hoss, Joe and Candy are riding the ranch when they come across a severely injured Cavalry officer who is able to get out that his unit needs help right before he dies. They end up finding a Cavalry united pinned down by a group of bandit who is lead by a man named Montana.

We learn that Candy literally grew up in a Cavalry unit and is known to many of the older officers. Also in the unit is the wife of the lead Officer Captain Jim Harris. It just turns out that Captain Harris's wife, Ann, is also the ex-wife of Candy.

During the story we learn that Candy had married Ann but her father, a Colonel, thought that Candy was not the best for his daughter. He sent Candy on patrols and then moved his daughter back east and annulled the marriage. Candy still has feeling for the Captain's wife. So we are placed in the middle of two men that love one woman but who will be the better man?

They needed a story for Candy and by golly the writers came up with a whopper. With very little known about Candy's early life the writers took all liberty into writing and inserting Candy. But overall this episode did provide suspense and interest that kept the viewer watching to the very end. That what all series strive for.

Candy's old friends

New Bonanza regular David Canary was featured in this episode when he's with Ben, Hoss, and Little Joe when they ride in and save a cavalry patrol under attack. It turns out that Candy was an army brat and was raised on a post like Corporal Rusty on Rin Tin Tin after he was orphaned. He knows everybody in the patrol except the new recruits and that includes Sandra Smith wife of Captain Pat Conway the commander of the patrol. They've put the payroll in an ambulance as if that fools the robbers. It's the reason that they're attacking the patrol.

And they know because the head of the outlaws is a former mixed race army scout played by Carlos Rivas. Canary and the Cartwrights bought into a real problem as they are still outnumbered even with the addition of them. Things also start heating up between Smith and Canary since she was ever so briefly his wife.

After making Canary a regular here's where they give him some background. It's a good story.
