One Gallant Hoss
bkoganbing20 March 2020
This episode has Dan Blocker performing a Sir Walter Raleigh act of sorts for actress Mariette Hartley who is on tour and can't get to Virginia City for a performance.

Later on he saves her again from the unwanted attentions of an admirer who wants her to himself. She in turn saves Hoss after he gets a good whack with a cane causing a concussion, she shoots her stage door Johnny.

Who happens to have US Senator Peter Whitney for a father and he wants to visit vengeance on the Cartwright family and the Ponderosa.

Nice performances from guest stars Mariette Hartley and Peter Whitney and Allen Garfield as Hartley's manager. Good scenes with Blocker and Hartley.

Well-acted but unsuccessful late series entry

Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers This ep features the one and only (and very beautiful) Mariette Hartley as an actress Hoss befriends and protects. He gets badly injured in the head while defending her and Hartley ends up committing self-defensive killing. For a while the ep starts not to look much like a Bonanza-ep with the recurring characters not having more than a minimum to do in it. It almost looks like the script was from a rejected movie and was just somewhat rewritten to fit the Bonanza format. Regulars seem out of character. Fans of the Beverly Hillbillies may enjoy seeing Lafe Crick himself (actor Peter Whitney) turn in a powerful, different and dramatic performance as the congressman-father of the murdered man. His performance is flawless but when he was threatening Ben with closing down the whole Ponderosa if his son's killer was not brought to justice it fails in viewer's eyes. This threat does not work to viewers as Ben must know at least a few Congressman who could counteract this Congressman threatened anti-Ponderosa act. Bad ep overall.
