It's Dan Blocker who rescues an Indian youth played by Jose DeVega who's injured and left out to die by his Ute tribe. The Ute culture is a spartan one and if one is injured one is left to die.
But things like torn muscles are cured by the white man's medicine as practiced by Grandon Rhodes who makes one of many appearances here as Virginia City's doctor. It's healed, but not the young man's hostility toward things Causcasian.
The very kindness shown by the Cartwrights to him confuses DeVega. He's also shown some really racist attitudes by other whites. And for reasons I never fathomed and they certainly aren't explained, Steven Gravers playing a Mexican horse wrangler on the Ponderosa has an instant dislike for DeVega. It goes beyond normal racial attitudes, especially when Mexicans are a mixed blood people themselves.
