THE BROTHERS BRANNAGAN – The Key of Jade -1961

This series, which ran during 1960 to 1961, stars Stephen Dunne and Mark Roberts as a pair of brothers who are private investigators. The two are based in Phoenix, Arizona. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. This is episode 38 in the series.

In this one, Mark Roberts is called to San Francisco to help an old family friend, Kam Tong. Tong's son, Aki Aleong, is in trouble with some upset residents of Chinatown. Aleong it seems has been collecting money to help smuggle folk's relatives out of Red China. The problem is that Aleong has been keeping the cash raised, $35,000, for himself. He is trying to impress a woman, Lisa Lu, who works at a high end club, The Jade Key.

Now the various people who fronted Aleong the cash want it back. They have sent a "collection agent", Philip Ahn, to help matters along. Ahn is not at all, adverse to the laying on of knuckles etc.

Roberts quickly hunts up Aleong and stops Ahn from hurting the young man. Aleong however legs it before Roberts can have a talk with the lad. So Roberts has a talk with Miss Lu. Lu agrees to get hold of Aleong and arrange a meeting. She phones Roberts and gives him an address. What he finds at the address, is several large men with a definite anti-social attitude. They give Roberts a vigorous round of "bounce the private investigator" and leave him in a heap on the floor.

Roberts figures it is Ahn who had the boys lay into him. He hunts up Ahn but quickly finds that the man had nothing to do with it. Ahn and Roberts now join forces to recover the cash and return Aleong "unharmed" to his father.

Ahn hits up Miss Lu's apartment to see if Aleong is hiding there. Roberts waits outside to see if Ahn does indeed flush out the game. Aleong bolts and heads for The Jade Key club. It seems that is where he has hidden the $35,000 he stole.

Roberts follows and grabs him and the cash. Now the club owner, Harry Lauter sticks his nose and gun into the mess. It turns out that Miss Lu and Lauter are really an item. Lu had been playing up to Aleong simply to find out where the cash was. Well of course guns and fists are required before the nasty types are foiled and the cash returned. It was Lu and Lauter who had sent the men to rough up Roberts. He was getting too close to disrupting their play for the 35 large.

There are plenty of twists and turns in this episode. The more of this series I see, the more I like it. Great fun!
