His well ordered academic life
bkoganbing22 February 2016
A couple of 40 somethings Joseph Cotten and Julie Adams are doing some antique shopping. As Cotten is an archaeologist that comes naturally. But Cotten sees the face of John Hoyt in the shop window and he changes from the charming Joseph Cotten we all know in the movies to something quite different. He's ready to drop his well ordered academic life to get Hoyt.

It's Adams who brings in the Checkmate team to prevent Cotten from killing Hoyt and ruining his life. There's another performance here from Simon Scott, friend of Cotten's who has even more reason to have it in for Hoyt.

This is one of the best Checkmate episodes yet.

Writers pulled the ending out of You Know Where

Warning: Spoilers
We've got another dynamite slate of guest stars here with the huge star Joseph Cotten and the beautiful Julie Adams ... who would MANY years later guest star on several episodes of Murder She Wrote.

Here her fiancé, Cotten, sees a man on the street through a store window and chases after him without success. He immediately resigns from his prestigious museum job, calls off his engagement, and with a close friend begin to hunt for the 'man in the window'. Julie Adams overhears him threaten to kill the man, and visits the offices of Checkmate to stop him from ruining his life.

There is a lot of believable investigative technique presented in the episode, but it's hard to believe the two men stick with their vendetta after Don intervenes, and the ending is completely off the rails.
