Losing Authority
claudio_carvalho2 July 2017
Caje blows-up a heavy machine gun nest and Sgt. Saunders and his squad find a baby in the barn and his mother dead near the well of a farmhouse in the enemy lines. They have to move back to their lines in less than two hours and forty minutes since the the artillery will fire at the area. Saunders tells to leave the baby protected in the barn, but the squad convinces him to take the baby to a nearby convent. When they arrive, they find that the convent was bombed out. Now they need to bring the baby to their own lines through the enemy territory in a dangerous journey.

"One More for the Road" is an episode of "Combat!" where Sgt. Saunders seems to be lost with the unique situation of finding an orphaned baby. He does not seem to know exactly what to do since his orders are questioned by the squad, maybe for the first time in this season. The dramatic and dangerous decision of carrying a baby while crossing the enemy lines is really difficult to be taken, and the remorse of losing a man may corroborate to affect him. But the conclusion is nice with Sauders showing his real feelings. My vote is eight.

War Orphans - Unfortunate Reality
jmarchese31 July 2014
"One More For The Road" forces poor Saunders to make a terrible and unthinkable decision as to whether or not to take a baby back through German territory to their own lines after it's mother was killed by German mortar fire the night before leaving it all alone. The Squad is upset with the Sarge at first but cool off when he finds a convent on the map and decides to take the kid along.

Finding the convent a non-entity, the real challenge begins. They have only 2 hours before American artillery fire will begin shelling the retreat area, and they've gone a little out of their way. And the baby issues begin to crop up, feeding and keeping the little one from making noise at the wrong times among the main ones.

It's a cute story. It took a lot of courage to address the war orphan issue at the infant level. Screen Writers Kay Lenard & Jess Carneol did a good job as the plot is realistic and very believable with one small exception, Cage's dealing with the German by the post. The scene was meant to increase excitement. Had it been Littlejohn, Clemenza, or a gorilla pulling it off, it would have been believable, but not the scrawny Cage. That aside, obstacles encountered by the squad keep suspense levels up and make for a smoothly flowing story.

Kirby's cow explanation totally busts the Sarge's chops, and I especially enjoyed Caje's initiative in the bicycle scene. Early combat and later artillery scenes keep the episode in line with the essence of the Combat series. Saunders "protective moment" is beautiful and I love what the squad members do to the Sarge upon arrival at another convent. Beautifully done! Whether it was Director McEveety or part of the original screenplay - great job!

Episode with a clear message children or babies weren't guilty for was born on wrong side!!
elo-equipamentos19 March 2023
Poignant episode focused in orphan German baby found by Sgt. Saunders squad during siege at farm, they rummage through the place to find out someone else, just a woman corpse laid down in the wreckage, probably his mother, everybody thrilled to find out so cute male baby however Sgt. Saunders disrupts the elation their subordinates saying icily that the baby must be left behind, everyone disagree however Sgt. Saunders stays stolid.

After some distance walked by the squad in a sepulchral quietness the conscience of tough Sgt. Saunders spoke louder, he demands that the Doc bring the forsaken baby to deliver in the near nunnery to cherish of all, although that place will be bombed by allied in 2 hours and forty minutes exactly and the squadron must leave such place, the first nunnery was crumbled, they headed to another, its mean crossing a fast-flowing river, such endeavor will be deadly for the little baby, just have a makeshift wooden passage on river surface escorted by German soldiers and the wise Cage saw a French passing by bicycle without no document being required.

Meanwhile the squad looking for a best place to cross the Soldier Cage get an old bicycle and the baby and throw herself and the baby as a French civilian on the improvised walk bridge hoping getting successful, otherwise will be the end of line for both, in this episode later the whole squad discovered that the boy is actually a German baby inflicting some regret overall nonetheless Sgt. Saunders states he isn't the enemy, he is just a baby and deserves be saves by such, moving story, the message is quite clear in a war enemies were created by stupid adults only, not children or even a baby whatever they are born!!

Thanks for reading.

8 Men and a Baby
zsenorsock24 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
While on routine patrol, Saunders and his squad come across a baby abandoned in a farmhouse. The men want to take it with them, Saunders insists on leaving it as a matter of the men's safety. But their grousing gets the better of him and he agrees to try and get the baby to a local convent. Kind of a routine episode, highlighted by Caje's impersonation of a French farmer to get the baby past German lines before the artillery shelling begins. As the one in charge of the baby Doc gets more screen time than usual but Steve Rogers doesn't make much use of it. It wouldn't be long before he would be replaced as the squad's medic.

The squad appears to be bucking for court martial the way they disobey Saunders to help the baby. Even when one of their own guys gets blown up by a mine going to get milk for the baby, it doesn't seem to wise them up at all.

There is also a reference to Little John's earlier episode where he tried to cart a bicycle all over France. But perhaps the most notable thing about this one is how eerily similar Saunders scene in this where he risks his life to save the baby is to Morrow's scene in "The Twilight Zone" where he was accidentally killed in a scene where he was trying to evacuate some kids.

Sentimental journey
lor_12 July 2023
Vic opens the show in hardhearted mode, refusing to let his troops bring a baby with them, who they just found alone (his mother dead nearby) after a battle with the Germans. He won't relent and the men are disgruntled on the walk back to their lines. Finally he changes his mind, and they go back ort the baby, to tote it to a nearby convent shown on the map.

There are dangers on their trek back to tier lines, but the journey is mainly occupied by their caring for the infant. The find a photo and discover it's a German soldier's child (mom was a collaborationist). And complicating matters the'[re faced by an encampment of Germans before the can reach the river they need to cross.

Ultimately they find a convent and turn the baby over to the nuns. But the troops are mighty sad to let it go -even Vic seems sentimental as he carries the infant over to a kindly nun.

Just another day of the war.(and saving on budget, with no guest stars, just twins playing the baby).
