Norman is doing an article on computer mating and uses Tom as his example. A reluctant Tom agrees on its academic merits. The results match him with Diane Kirby (Sabrina Scharf, "Easy Rider")- an attractive, science-minded, self-proclaimed "key employee" of the computer dating office. With complete faith in the computer's decision, she views Tom as a serious, definite match and plans marriage. She forms an instant bond with Eddie who "really likes her". Mrs. Livingston sagely surmises that Tom filled out the questionnaire thinking of a mother for Eddie, rather than a wife for himself. Tom doesn't feel she is right for him, but begins to question whether he should pursue it for Eddie's sake. The computer makes another revelation.
