There's a new chief in town.
Sleepin_Dragon2 January 2021
Mainwaring gives the men a lecture, about German uniforms, naturally he's irritated by the attitudes of the men.

Sheer class, it's a very funny episode, the lecture is so funny, and the subsequent fallout is even funnier, I love the way Mainwaring focuses on the appearances of the soldiers,

John Laurie is at his best, when you see interviews with him, you get the impression that he loved this role, but perhaps felt he was worthy of a bigger role, and a greater rank, and he is brilliant here, what a commanding actor.

Best of all, the irritations Mainwaring feels towards Wilson, the way he looks at him when he puts on his monocle, it just further shows the chasm between the two when it came to societal standing.

Brilliant, 9/10.

A sadly truncated look at the platoon under Fraser
tfevans9 March 2023
The episode that was infamously shown by the BBC just before the Scottish Independence referendum - Fraser is given an opportunity to lead the platoon to show him that it's not so easy after all.

After leading protests against Mainwaring's boring lectures, Fraser is asked to take charge temporarily as a learnung exercise, and proceeds to make some controversial changes.

An excellent idea that is rather sadly not given enough time to be fully explored, as much of the episode is taken up by the aforementioned lectures and then a fairly silly resolution.

There are a few amusing moments in the lectures where Mainwaring substitutes his own ideas of how to recognise Germans. It's great fun but doesn't quite deliver on its promise.

A bit of a retread but decent enough
phantom_tollbooth5 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If the Cap Fits... is a decent enough little episode which examines the volatile relationship between Mainwaring and the insubordinate Fraser. Mainwaring decides to teach Fraser a lesson by allowing him to take charge of the platoon for a few days, during which Fraser begins making rash changes to the rankings of the troops and ultimately mounts a full blown sabotage attempt on Mainwaring. John Laurie's excellent performance as the sometimes frighteningly aggressive Fraser had demanded an episode spotlighting him for a while. The problem is If the Cap Fits... feels like a retread of the superior series 2 episode A Stripe for Fraser, in which a promotion unleashed the full tyranny of the character for the first time. If the Cap Fits... ends on a nice little twist in which Mainwaring gets the better of Fraser in a surprising and understated way, but ultimately the episode falls a bit sort of the best of the series.
