It's the oddest episode of all.

Let's make this clear before we start, this is the most daft episode of Dad's Army ever made, with the most daft plot of all time, however when you look into it, these events did actually happen, to a degree.

I don't think you could argue that it's one of the funniest episodes, it's so absurd, that it's hard to take seriously. However there are some funny moments, and amusing lines, it once again makes full use of the ego of Captain Mainwaring, he has so much conceit, that he's lured into accepting the secret mission, without even knowing what it entails.

Credit to them for doing something different, I bet this was a nightmare to make and assemble, but they managed to put together an unusual episode.

Daft fun, 6/10.

A great little Horror movie, Dad's Army style

Warning: Spoilers
This episode, in which the platoon find themselves relentlessly pursued by a new War Office explosive device that takes the shape of a large radio-controlled wheel, seems to generally be considered a bit strange and is currently one of the lowest rated episodes on IMDB. Maybe it's my penchant for those moments when TV shows try something a bit unusual but I thought this was great. In particular, the final stretch in which the Home Guard can't seem to escape the malevolent wheel sometimes plays like an oddball Horror film and I couldn't help but be put in mind of the cult 2010 Horror movie Rubber, about a sentient tyre that goes on a murderous rampage. Of course, the supernatural element is not part of Dad's Army's approach, but the final scenes in which the deactivated wheel is mourned as a worthy foe do play into the personification of the giant circular antagonist. The location filming is as good as we've come to expect from this ambitious sitcom and the result is an atmospheric, fun, very unusual half hour that I consider quite underrated.
