Holy neo-Nazis, Joe is approached by some interesting people!
planktonrules27 November 2009
This is an interesting setup for the show. Joe is invited to a party he really does not want to attend but be begrudgingly goes. Once there, he's approached by a couple nuts who are far-rightists who are in favor of law and order...and carrying illegal machine guns to 'defend themselves'! The reason they take the risk to talk to the police is that they think Joe will play ball and help them get expedited gun permits for some stolen guns--some very, very nasty stolen guns. Plus, the guy who wants this 'favor' has a record for Assault with a Deadly Weapon--and there is no way he can get a permit unless someone agrees to give him the permit illegally.

Naturally, Joe goes to his bosses to tell them about the nuts who have contacted them. They want him to continue working with this group and get evidence on them for violation of gun laws--and to find out where a shipment of stolen military guns are stashed.

The problem is that while the leader of this militia seems to like Joe, he's very cagey and careful. Just when it looks like Joe's about to find out about the hidden cache, the guy backs off quickly and tells Joe to get out...now. What happened?! What about the deal?! What about the stolen guns?! See this rather scary episode. Scary, because it's tough imagining that there are crazies out there like this guy! Well written and interesting.

An interesting episode from a historical perspective

Warning: Spoilers
This episode came out one year before the gun control act of 1968. While the perps in this episode may well have broken the law by possessing and selling stolen government property, machine guns were not illegal at that time. One merely had to pay a $200 per gun tax to the treasury department. Further, existing unregistered firearms could be registered up until the amnesty in 1968. Like similar groups today, the group portrayed seemed to be more reactionary or defensive, even downright docile. At no point did they illegally discharge these weapons or suggest an intention to physically harm others. So, while the episode seemed to suggest that they were highly dangerous people with illegal and fearful firepower, they were in fact simply tax violators with stolen government property.
