I have always loved this episode, but I did not remember loving it this much. Quite frankly, I was never a fan of Neal or his story lines. And this episode is partly about Sam finding that Neal's dad is cheating. I liked this storyline much better this time around. Especially from Sam's point of view and how he cries in Harold's arms after getting an Atari. He doesn't cry about the game, but because he is happy to have a father like him.

The Freaks storyline, as always, appeals much more to me. Ken -- who is pretty much a sarcastic bastard has a crush on a meanie band geek chick. Their scenes were a little awkward, but realistic. And it was nice when they finally made out. I absolutely loved the soundtrack for this episode, so many great songs -- especially 'Free Bird' during the final scene. Just perfect.

PS: Nick is still pathetic. I really dislike him.

This episode gets five stars. One of the best.

The Garage Door (#1.12)

Warning: Spoilers
Sam catches Neal's father cheating and tells it to his friend. Ken finds a girl that he has a crush on and Lindsay helps him to have a date with her.

The story about Neal's dad cheating was really good. They portray so well how they all dealt with it. Sam with thinking to tell it to Neal or not. Neal first trying to be in denial and then finding that garage opener. The moment he finds that garage door that opens with his father's car behind it is heartbreaking.

Nice to see a bit more about Ken as well. That girl that he met ended up being a very good match to him.

Trouble on the home front

If "Freaks and Geeks" has a flair for mixing humor and drama, 'The Garage Door' is Exhibit A. It's also a prime example of further fleshing out its supporting cast. Turns out Ken (the resident smartass) has a heart, and the band geek who steals it is his sarcastic equal. More Seth Rogen on this show is never a bad thing.

But it's primarily a somber episode that deals with the horrible toll of keeping a secret; like not telling anyone that Neal's dad is having an affair. It's hard to watch Neal spend his waking hours in search of his dad's secret love nest, and even more painful to see Sam getting a crash course in adult duplicity. Neal's real torment will come later, but for now, it's a harsh truth for Sam.

It's no mystery that life is hard, but it's far worse when the kids suffer. It'd be too simple to say the best episodes are the rough ones, but this certainly supports that argument. As touching as it is torturous.

I've been watching this show on Netflix in the last couple of days, and so far I've really liked it- I thought the jokes were and relatable and that the cast was impressive. But this episode really grabbed me by surprised - Sam finds out Neal's dad is having an affair. This event leads to some more events, but the ending of this episode really made me tear up. Six more episodes to go and I hope the show keeps on being this good.
