Could It Be... Satan?
Gislef31 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The plot sounds hokey and convoluted. Lucifer not only wants to get revenge on the trio, but wants Micki to bear his baby. So Lucifer brings back three dead friends/lovers of our intrepid trio, traps two of them in a castle in a cursed snow globe, and takes on the form of Micki's friend Calvin to seduce her and trick her into having his baby.

Somehow the story works. Mainly because at first you don't know what's going on. Calvin strangles a Spanish hooker in Buenos Aires. While having the snow globe on the hotel bar next to him. As people are likely to do, am I right? Then Calvin is executed in a prison, while Lucifer speaks in his head telling him that he needs Calvin somewhere else.

The story moves to Nigeria, where Brother Antonio tries to rape a local women. The local men stop him, and set him on fire as Satan speaks in Antonio's head saying that he needs him.

Then we jump to Miami, where "angel of mercy" Maya is released on bail and cuts her own wrists. I like the jumping around the globe. It's accomplished with stock footage and a few closed sets. But it still helps to give the episode the feel that Lucifer is pulling out all the stops to stop them.

All three of them in Hell, with Lucifer telling him that he needs them to get revenge on our trio. Calvin and Antonio arrive at the shop and convince Micki and Jack, respectively, to come with them. They end up at the castle in the snow globe after passing through a freak blizzard. Meanwhile, it turns out that Ryan and Maya used to be an item and she shows up at the shop to pooh-pooh his efforts to track down his friends..

It turns out the whole thing is a ploy by Satan using the first two damned souls to lure Micki and Jack trio into the castle in the snow globe, and then have a child with Micki. Maybe Lucifer has a thing for redheads. Maybe he's just hard up. Yeah, I get that it's a revenge thing, but it still seems like there's easier ways to bring a Satanic child into the world. And why lure Jack there? And not Ryan?

There are bits of continuity. Micki's fiancée Lloyd gets mentioned for the first time since season one's "Root of All Evil", I think. Fortunately we don't have to see or hear from him: remember how he broke into Curious Goods to "check" on Micki. Stalker much?

Carolyn Dunn returns for her third different role on the show, as Ryan's former love Maya. The star of the show is Guy Bannerman, who doesn't seem to have done a lot of movies and TV. He portrays Antonio as deliciously evil, and makes a worthy foil to Chris Wiggins. Stephen Meadows as Micki's ex-friend and Lucifer surrogate is pretty much forgettable as a pretty boy whose job is to seduce Micki so she'll get Micki to agree to have sex with Lucifer and bear his child.

I don't know who does the voice of Lucifer. Whoever it is, he's more effective than the bull-moose high school production we saw in "Doorway to Hell".

The episode is a pleasant change from the ordinary. There's no antique, and Maya is sympathetic while Antonio is evil with a capital E. It's nice to see Lucifer finally doing something proactive against the trio: his efforts in previous episodes, with or without Lewis, have been lackluster at best. Lucifer's interest in using Micki to bear his child is out of left field, but it does add to the creepy vibe. And it keeps the story going, rather than just having Lucifer kill them outright.

And the episode highlights what we've seen in the past. It's a trope now, but introducing a loved one (or three) , but introducing a romantic interest on the show is an almost sure sign they'll be dead before the end of the episode. Here we get three loved ones (whatever Antonio is to Jack), and they're already dead when the episode starts. It's like writers Peter Lauterman and Angelo Stea were poking fun at the concept.

There are some goofy bits. Calvin asks Micki if she'd have sex with him if he wasn't the man he seemed. She says yes, and... who the heck says that? So if she learned Calvin was a serial killer (which he sort of is), Micki would still have sex with him. It doesn't say much for her taste in bed partners. Maya's turning against Lucifer isn't that surprising and doesn't say much about his knowledge of human nature. This is the deity who regularly cuts deals with people for their souls and screws them. Ryan has had other girlfriends who probably ended up in Hell: couldn't Lucifer recruit one of them? What happened to Cathy Steiner in "Double Exposure"? It's sad to think of her ending up in Hell, but let's face it: she probably wasn't saintly enough to get into Heaven.

Apparently the damned trio are trying re to get Jack (and then Ryan) to exchange his soul for Micki's... chastity. Or not birthing Lucifer's child. Or whatever. But once it's clear Jack ain't going for that deal (Micki: Thanks, Jack!), why don't they just kill Jack? Lucifer even says the magical snow globe can't support all three of them, and that's why he sent Maya to keep Ryan away. Wouldn't killing Jack keep the trio from "overloading" the snow globe?

So "Wedding" kinds of shoots the pooch. Instead of tossing in some people that actually might have a grudge against the trio for getting them killed, we get three friends who we've never heard of before and will never hear about again.

Overall, "Wedding" isn't a bad episode. But it has a few flaws that prevent it from reaching greatness.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
