You'll laugh, you'll cry, etc

Sitcoms have always had trouble mixing laughs and pathos (part of the problem is there isn't enough time for the complexities to play out; the other part is such shows generally don't attract the greatest writers in the world), but "The Golden Girls" did it better than most. They blended things so (generally) skillfully that sometimes a single line of dialogue could make you laugh and tear up simultaneously. This episode about Big Daddy's death is a pretty good example.

Another thing: I know it isn't cricket to expect absolute consistency from sitcoms episode by episode, since the writers often change basic facts over the years to fit new story line directions, but one thing stuck out in this one; when Blanche's sister Virginia berates her for "never being there for the family", I couldn't help thinking Blanche should have come back with, "Oh really? How about in Season One when I volunteered to give you one of my kidneys when you were dying?!?"

Ebb Tide (#5.11)

Warning: Spoilers
Blanche goes to a ball instead of visiting her Big Daddy and next day her sister Virginia calls her to tell that he is dead. She goes with Dorothy for the funeral, but doesn't attend it and comes to say good bye to his grave afterwards. Meanwhile Sophia is renting out their rooms to the boarders so she can buy a TV.

A nice and emotional episode. It was great to see Blanche dealing with the death of her father. Coming to terms with it and saying good bye. Very well done.

The scene where they look at the picture album where Dorothy makes fun of Blanche for being fat as a kid was very funny though.

Goodbye, Big Daddy.

Warning: Spoilers
After beong made chairwoman of the orange ball, Blanche gets a call from Big Daddy who wants to see her. She promises that she'll visit as soon as she can, but he passes away the very next day. Being reunited and sister Virginia brings out old resentments which sours his memorial, but at least Dorothy is there to support her.

Back in Miami, Sophia, desperate to make enough money to buy a big screen TV, rents out the vacant rooms, and this leads to Blanche's valuable orange ball plate being broken. The episode shows Sophia at her most devious, Blanche being both selfish and vulnerable, Dorothy being supportive (but finding an old photo of a chunky Blanche to bw worth joking about) and Rose being used . There are plenty of heartfelt moments mixed in with the comedy so it ends up being most memorable even if Sophia's renting out the rooms isn't one of the better secondary plots.
