No one wants to date the boss's daughter...or the colonel's, for that matter. A search is conducted for an appropriate escort to the Enlisted Men's Ball, but there are no takers, neither among the officers, nor the men in the barracks.
Somehow, Gomer (being the most innocuous man that can be found) is selected for the honor, and finds himself taking the colonel's daughter to the dance. Pyle's date finds him kind and courteous and fun, and the two sneak out of the dull, boring dance and wind up on a porch swing in the middle of the night. Gomer sings a charming song that deeply moves both his date AND us out here in the audience (Jim Nabors wasn't known as a singer without good reason, and it's surprisingly beautiful to listen to!)
These two are obviously having a good time, and just as we are about to be treated to a rendition of "Rain, Come Wet Me 'Cause I'm Dirty, Dirty, Dirty!" the couple is busted by the date police. The colonel and his wife are angrily confronted by their daughter, who is sick and tired of being tied down and controlled by them. Gomer says goodnight, as his date thanks him for a nice evening together, and his part in helping her finally feel ready to get out from under her parents' thumbs and strike out for a life of her own choosing.
