A simple story that played out as expected
kfo949413 September 2013
In a rather simple story we have a man, Cy Welch, that is set for trial on theft charges and the two witnesses for the prosecution are Matt Dillon and a local farmer Grant Lucas.

Grant has come to town a few days early and gets friendly with a saloon woman Mae Talmy. Mae invites Grant to her house after work but when he shows up Mae shoots Grant claiming he was trying to break into her room.

Later Doc tells Matt that he knows the defendant, Cy Welch, as a poor gambler from back on riverboats on the Mississippi River. This goes with other information that Matt has received about Mae working on the same riverboats. Matt and Chester take a walk over to talk to Mae only to find more trouble.

Nothing wrong with the story just very predictable and played out just as expected. There was nothing that is remarkable about the episode and no great suspense during the format. Even though nicely done by the actors, it was just a plain tale that has been told many times.

Sub-Par

Mae's (Harrison) a bar girl at the Long Branch where she gives Grant (Elliot) a big-eyed come on. So she sets up a date for later when he's to come discretely by the window of her hotel. When he arrives she's outfitted seductively and he thinks it's his lucky day, but it isn't.

Not one of writer Meston's better scripts, plus Harrison has trouble with some of her lines. There's really not much suspense while the mystery is short-lived. As usual, there's the banter between Doc and Chester, but here it does a lot to liven up the otherwise rather dull proceedings. To me, the entry seems almost like it's on auto-pilot, without the usual series verve.

(*Kitty to Marshal Dillon quote*) - "You think they'll hang him?"

In 2 days time, prime witness, Grant Lucas will be at the murder trial set against big-shot gambler, Sy Welch.

Saloon girl, Mae Talamy (who's very seductive) sets Lucas up for the fall by luring him to her room (after hours) at the Grand Hotel.

Mae bungles her end of the deal with Welch and Marshal Dillon investigates all of the violent goings on.
