Deep in the Heart of Dixieland
coltras3520 September 2023
While attempting to clear a friend of murder charges, the Harts become entangled in a disturbed woman's fantasies.

Jazz aficionados would probably like this, at least the first half with Jonathan Hart blowing his trumpet along with his piano playing friend who is accused of killing his singer girlfriend after she breaks up with him. The mystery is actually quite good, however the conclusion is a little confusing in regards to whether Anita was Victoria or vice versa. Sort of understand it after a few viewings but it's not explained well. Was the real Anita the psychiatric nurse? The villainess is quite creepy.

They're Getting' the Band Back Together, but This One's No Mission from God.

I was totally not impressed with this episode. Jonathan's old friend is jamming Dixieland Jazz while Jonathan plays some serious notes on his old, prized possession trumpet. Turns out there are two more to the old band that join them for a gig at a local joint. I was turned off by the condition of the trumpet. I know it's a little thing, it's just a prop, right? No! They make this big megilla of the horn being a special instrument, it used to belong to the main antagonist in this ep, and it's clearly a piece of crap. Not vintage, not character ... crap. Then it gets a dent, and Jonathan doesn't freak. Sorry, if my old clarinet from high school were to get damaged, I'd get mad. On the other hand, I really appreciated how RJ must have really spent a good deal of time trying to get the fingerings to look realistic. They were wrong, no question, but they were good enough, and that took a lot of effort. There's also a great shot of Jennifer taping the performance ... with a cassette tape recorder and microphone! Hahahaha! Then there's the unravelled answer to the mystery, which is actually quite creepy. THAT was good. I wish they'd gotten there a lot sooner -- and I was stumped, so they did a good job there -- and made it more about that plot point and less about the band.

I'm...So Confused
amylovestv30 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of this episode was all right. Kind of slow-paced but not horrible. I actually was fooled into believing Jonathan was playing the trumpet until I read HilaryElizabeth9's review. I did start to get confused, though, when Victoria broke things off with Russel. She said "It's no longer the two of us," or something like that. Not only did she further explain what that meant but Russel didn't even ask! He just lets her walk off and accepts his fate that she was breaking up with him. Doesn't sound like the behavior of a man who wanted to marry her.

Then when Russel gets drunk and Victoria comes back, apologizing for singing and that she "should have realized..." She never finishes her sentence before the scene cuts, prompting even more questions of why she's changing her tune (no pun intended) toward him so suddenly.

Then fast-forward to the end when Anita is revealed to be the killer. (I saw that coming from a mile away.) Though I had a very strong suspicion Anita was guilty, her reasoning made absolutely no sense. It turns out that Anita is actually Victoria...? Then who in the world was the Victoria that died?! And there was no explanation for why there were duplicates of different sized dresses in the closet. There was no explanation for why Anita started to think Jennifer was Victoria...when she knew SHE HERSELF was Victoria? And man, the ending scene where J & J take down Anita (or whoever she is) was utterly laughable. Talk about corny. If someone has a better understanding of this episode, maybe they'd enjoy it, but as for me, I was frowning in confusion the majority of the time.
