Such hilarious campy villains. Lots of Freeway. Great fun. I loved it!

Warning: Spoilers
I notice this episode has a bit lower ratings, but I loved it.

First of all, we see lots of that little cutie-pie, Freeway. Always a joy to see, and this episode was actually about him.

But the fun part was the villains, Ruby & Dr. Cobb. They were so campy as such oddball weirdos. I mean seriously it was so funny when Ruby asked the Harts if they wrestle. The look on Jonathon and Jennifer's faces during this convo was priceless. And you know how expressive Jennifer's face is, lol. It's apparent that Ruby and Dr. Cobb are swingers too, and the convo had lots of double entendres. So funny!

I got such a huge laugh when Ruby fought Jonathon with her wrestling moves. Lol. Jonathon also fought Ben Bates again who played Mr. Cutshall. He was in a previous episode, 'The Man with the Jade Eyes,' playing a different character. He kinda reminded me of Jaws from the Bond movies, even though he was playing a different character. The guy is 6'7, and Jonathon's punches have no impact against him. The look on Jonathon's face in both these episodes....lol.

To top off the humor, Stanely & Deanne, recurring characters that work at Hart Industries, end up eating Freeway's dog food, thinking it was pâté. Only in rich people's homes, huh! The dog food had a narcotic in it. I mean really this shouldn't be funny as Max's expression attested to, but the scene just ended up being hilarious.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun watching this one. Campy is an art form, so it's ok to appreciate that, especially when it's well done. I mean come on, we aren't meant to take this show seriously, we're meant to have fun and enjoy the escapism and the silliness. 9/10.

Back to the successful formula
abcs9910 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This marks a return to the successful formula of this series. Introduce the nefarious part of the plot. Introduce the Harts in some light-hearted moments featuring Max. Cleverly bring the two together. Reveal the murder. Keep the storyline going and the audience wondering how the Harts will be connected to it, and to what part(s) they will be connected to. Finally, someone spills the beans and the Harts' curiosity is stoked. An encounter with a thug spurs them to investigate further. We learn the nefarious element, although the murder isn't it (nor is even mentioned - evidently, that element was well covered up). Crooks and Harts have their encounters. The Harts eventually win. Ends with a light wrap-up that has a touch of humor. Where this episode excels is that the intrigue is drawn out, and the sport of the lead thugs is brought into play towards the end.

Freeway is the only star in this dud episode
uber_geek27 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The best thing about this episode is Freeway...and Max to a lesser degree. The bad guys plot is not really clear. At first it's like they're making an addictive dog food so once the dog is hooked, he'll attack his owner to get it and won't eat anything else. So it seems the only motive is supposed to be money, (although in reality, people would probably get rid of their dog if it did that.)

Max takes Freeway in the park and they end up participating in a tryout for a dog food commercial. He doesn't believe Freeway will touch it because Max makes him a homemade dinner, but Freeway gobbles it down. Max also gets several sample cans of the food as well as of course, winning a spot in the commercial. So you wonder: is Freeway going to snap at the Harts or Max? Freeway never does that, but he won't touch even Max's special, homemade dinner after they run out of the canned food. He's also acting very lethargic. The Harts eventually meet up with the bad guys as the company is (of course) one of theirs. The woman is just weird and you wonder what steroids she's taking as she seems really aggressive and wants to get Jonathan in a "clinch." The guy is in a wheel chair, insinuating that an accident with the woman put him there. There's also a marketing man who is involved until he finds out that they plan to create people food also and after he wants out; they kill him before he can warn the Harts.

Meanwhile the Harts host a party. Stanley Friesen (the stereotypical accountant) is now a semi-regular. He and a couple of other guests bring out what they think is pate from the kitchen, but it's actually the dog food. They can't seem to get enough and their behavior confirms the Harts' suspicions of the dog food affecting Freeway's personality. The rest is the typical formulaic getting the bad guys and foiling their plot. But this is hardly the world takeover using people's pets, which is where it sounded like it was going in the beginning.

Warning: Spoilers
U want a good cheesy scooby doo mystery & even the wrap up ending was just ridiculous plus lots of 1980 "crime" & "mystery" cheese to the max this is it. Wow it was funny in that one part after they filmed the "doggone-its"(LOL dog gone it! My dopes all gone! Lmao!!) commercial too- I think they were supposed to be swingers and trying to get the Harts to swing but can't say it on 1980 tv so they said "wrestling" lol although that over the top campy "Natasha" (from bullwinkle n rocky show- if u know u know) style criminal actually DID seem to use some wrestling moves on Mr Hart. The Harts are always soo cheery too- not even mentioning the murdered chick n the beginning or any care for the dude in the office they just move right along like they didn't just find a dead guy -and it's not even their line of work!?? They just happen upon murder every episode 😂

Excellent Character Actors
amorehl8 July 2023
I liked this episode for a very esoteric reason. No, not the dog. Or Max. No, it was great to see John Colenback as dog food ad executive Ken Davern. Unfortunately, it was quickly apparent his character was not long for this world. But speaking of "the world," I used to love watching him on "As the World Turns." Soap operas were noted for their wacky plot twists, but I still remember one I've never seen, before or since. His character, Dr. Dan Stewart, went through so many travails to finally marry his beloved Elizabeth. Then she promptly died when she fell UP the stairs!

As for the others on the show, I always enjoyed whenever they had on Lee Wilkof as the nerdy scientist Stanley Friesen. Granted, "Hart to Hart" is pretty much a comedy anyway, but he still managed to provide "comedy relief" in his every appearance. And of course the ubiquitous Kenneth Mars is famous for his nutty characters, most notably in Mel Brooks films, and his Dr. Cobb is another excellent performance. Perhaps my favorite character of his was in the guise of William W. D. 'Bud' Prize, appearing with 2 other marvelous comedians, Martin Mull & Fred Willard, on "Fernwood Tonight." If you want to see some really superb comedy, try tracking down "Fernwood Tonight"!
