The Harts Get Physical

Viewed now, this episode is a nice little throwback to the birth of the modern workout, known in 1981 as "the workout craze." Former Mr. Universe Frank Zane is not a great actor, but his laudable attempt is commendable! He leads a slew of male and female bodybuilders showing off their rips and cuts during this show. I worried a bit that Lionel Stander was being a bit too manhandled during his big scene, as he's not just not a spring chicken, but was, in fact, 73 at the time this one was taped. The continued attempts by the dumb goons to make off with a barbell the size of Miami are amusing, and the workout outfits are a stitch! No pun intended. The final expository scenes were actually quite interesting and gave a rare depth to the "bad guy of the week" throwaway characters of the time.

Max's bodybuilder protégé Vince is about to open a gym, but someone tries to steal Vince's famous barbells - twice. They leave Max injured the first time and a Scotland Yard inspector dead the second time, muttering the name Noel Teppman, an almost-mythical gold thief. Jonathan realizes Vince has been pumping not iron but gold and sets a trap for Teppman. -

An average episode made interesting by the presence of Frank Zane, world famous bodybuilder. His acting is amateurish, but he has much screen presence and a natural charm.
