One of those openings you smile at today (2017). When Ward is all dressed for work in a suit and tie, Beaver asks if everyone at Ward's office wears a suit and tie every day. Ward say of course, it wouldn't look right if people showed up in just sports shirts and sweaters. To which Beaver retorts: yeah, I guess it would make work look too easy.
And June, who usually runs Wally's life has somehow forgotten she has to attend an open house with Wally at his school. June was going to collect for the Community Chest but Beaver volunteers, and Ward believes it should be a good experience in responsibility. Beaver and Gilbert head out.
I got a kick out of Wally making sure his mother looked like a regular mom, and didn't wear furs or get a chauffeur like one of the other kid's mother did. But when June put on a pair of gloves, that took me back. You have to be like me, older than dirt, to remember when women wore a hat and gloves to go out. I still remember my mother had white glove with a small faux pearl at the end of each cuff.
After a false start when a man comes to the door, Beaver does OK. But on their way home, Beaver stops to get ice cream cones (June gave him the money), but he sticks the can in his rear pocket and it falls out and gets left behind on the bench. Beaver tells Wally what happened, and Wally says he better get his homework done early because there is going to be a lot of yelling. Beaver tells Ward what happened; and Ward says he will replace the money. but Beaver has to go to each house to ask what they gave.
At the first stop Beaver explains what happened and the lady gives him the money again. Beaver explains that she's not supposed to do that, that he lost the money and he has to pay it back. She says, nonsense and that Beaver should remind his father that once he was a little boy too. And as Beaver does his rounds, with Gilbert in tow, most of the women do the same. And because some feel Beaver's father is being mean, they double the amount they gave. When Ward gets home, June told him what happened and after answering the phone, he goes upstairs to see Beaver. Beaver announces he collected eighteen whole dollars, and Wally suggests Ward no longer has to replace the money. Ward says the can was found, Beaver concludes he now has double the money to give the Community Chest. Ward now wants Beaver to offer the money he collected back to the people who gave it to him. Wally doesn't think that's a good solution, and after a little consideration, Ward agrees. Ward tries calling the people but they don't want their money back. Ward tells June he thinks the neighbors are just getting sick of hearing from Cleavers.
I don't know about this episode. I grew up in a pretty middle class neighborhood for the time period, but I don't believe the neighbors would have been so generous. The houses were not as upscale as those in the Cleaver neighborhood. Even Beaver and Wally had their own bathroom. There were 140 homes in the original development which was built in 1950, and not one of them had two bathrooms. Even as the area grew, only the fancy money had a house with one and a half bathrooms. It wasn't until we hit the late 80's that two bathroom homes started going up.
And for a few who are just slightly younger than dirt, sharp eyes might spot Lee Meriwether coming to open a door as one of the mothers in the neighborhood. She is better remembered for playing as Betty Jones, daughter-in-law of Barnaby Jones in the series of the same name. Buddy Ebsen played Barnaby of course. You have to know Buddy Ebsen, movie star, and TV star playing George Russel (Davy Crockett), Sergeant Hunk Marriner (Northwest Passage), Jed Clampett (Beverly Hillbillies), and Roy Houston (Matt Houston).
