Eddie shows he is human
LukeCoolHand5 October 2022
Eddie Haskel in a rare scene. Actually admits to being a big stupid dope. And Wally tells him his Dad has been saying that for years and Eddie actually laughs at the statement which is also rare for Eddie. This was a very good episode that lets Eddie Haskel be the brunt of stupidity instead of Beaver for a welcome change. That Eddie Haskel always adds a good amount of humor into any episode he's in. To me the final season is the best one and really shows the full develoment of all the characters. I am so looking forward to the rest of the season 6 episodes. Wonder if my channel is going to start over with season one at the end of this one as I started watching the show at the start of season 2 about 5 or 6 months ago..

Can you butter-up your way to the top? Yes, if you are Eddie.
pensman23 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Wally and Eddie are both trying for a weekend job. Ward might be willing to help. But does it have to be a package deal? Wally says Ward doesn't have to worry, if Eddie fools around then Wally will clobber him. Eddie is his usual self, decrying any possibility Ward might come through. Ward delivers. A golf-friend offers the boys a job at Mayfield Dairy. Eddie's first question of Wally: Have your dad find out how long do we get for coffee breaks.

Eddie shows up to pick up Wally. Eddie is dressed to be a junior executive with jacket and tie; Eddie tells Wally, he figures with the pull Ward has with the owner that they will have offices. Wally laughs at Eddie and tells him they are in the shipping department the job is loading and unloading trucks. But something is up. The foreman is approached by one of his men who asks if the Cleaver boy will cramp their style? He might, but Eddie is made for them and their "set-up."

During dinner, Wally talks about the job. Wally says he's tired. How about Eddie? Eddie is working real hard too, when the foreman is watching. Eddie drops by to further butter up Ward, and let him know he is trying his best so not to disappoint him. Eddie talks to Wally claiming they are working too hard. Eddie says they need to move upward and get a position where they can take it easy. To that end, Eddie says we butter up the foreman. Wally tells Eddie if he wants to get ahead then to just do his job and work hard. We sort of hear unspoken reminisces from Maynard G. Kreps (The Many Loves of Dobbie Gillis) with the cry "WORK' going up to heaven.

At work, Eddie puts his plan into play, is there anything he can do as a favor for the foreman. Sure, the foreman says take three cases of ice cream and put them in the trunk of the gray car. Eddie even gets Wally to carry the cases claiming this will be Eddie in good. You never know how advantageous a little favor like this can be. Next Eddie shows up at the Cleaver house with a carton of ice cream. What are you doing here, asks Wally? Eddie says he hung around the plant, and the foreman said he was to help himself to a carton. Wally says he doesn't know about this, but Eddie says his being nice is paying off.

There is a problem at the plant. Apparently ice cream cases have gone missing down at the plant. Ted Worden has told Ward about the ice cream problem; he's looking into the thefts and keeping it quiet until he can figure out what's going on. When Ward finds ice cream in his refrigerator, he wants to know what's going on. Wally tells his dad how he got the ice cream and Eddie's story. Wally asks if his dad thinks the foreman is stealing. Ward doesn't know, but he does know an investigation is going on. Ward says not to say anything, but to take anything from anybody. And Ward says he should warm Eddie not to take anything either. Wally tells Eddie not to move any more of the ice cream to the foreman's trunk. Eddie believes Wally is just making a bunch of noise and is trying to "queer" his deal with the foreman. Wally can't stand to see Eddie moving up; Wally is jealous.

Eddie is told to load more cartons and Eddie gets caught by Mr. Worden and blamed for the thefts. Wally is able to help straighten things up with Mr. Worden. Turns out the foreman and his buddy were selling the ice cream to stores on their way home. Eddie even stops by to see Wally. He needs Wally to apologize to Ward for him. Just tell him I'm sorry for being a big stupid dope. Don't worry about that Eddie, Wally says. My dad has suspected that you were that for years.

Wally says he is exhausted, too tired for anything. Then he gets a call from Mary Ellen. They are going to go out for a movie. Wally is up for that, but not for the stop afterwards: she wants to go to the ice cream parlor.

LITB's Version of "On the Waterfront"
MichaelMartinDeSapio27 April 2016
"This is America - the land of opportunity! Let's move onward and upward to a job where we can take it easy!" - Eddie Haskell

It's notable how many of Wally's after-school jobs involved ice cream: at various times he sold ice cream out of a cart ("Wally the Businessman") or delivered it from door to door ("Wally's Weekend Job"); and here Wally and Eddie - thanks to a good word from Ward - both get jobs working at the Mayfield Dairy Company, where ice cream is made. This has the makings of a delicious occupation, but Eddie's wise-guy impulses kick in. The IMDb plot summary puts it well: "Eddie has thoughts of grandeur above the manual labor they are asked to perform for the job." Ever the social climber, Eddie seeks to gain advancement by buttering up the loading-dock foreman and doing what he thinks are special favors. Will the boys' jobs be jeopardized as a result?

With all these dirty doings on the docks, the plot for this episode occasionally made me think of the film classic "On the Waterfront." In fact, at one point Ward essentially tells Wally to put his nose to the grindstone and keep quiet, as with Terry Malloy in that film. Things certainly threaten to turn serious for our heroes, and at episode's end a repentant Eddie has learned a lesson he won't forget. Eddie's twisted version of the American dream is shown for what it is.

EDDIE AND THE BAD GUYS!
tcchelsey1 April 2024
Hugh Beaumont, with all his years playing movie detectives back in the 40s, was the right choice to direct this story. It's a rare episode, that combines both comedy and some high drama, and I think one of the best of the final season.

Wally and Eddie land jobs at the local ice cream company, thanks to Ward who knows someone in management. They're working the loading dock and everything should go well --until Eddie wants to cozy up to the foreman, well played by Howard Caine (from HOGANS HEROES). Eddie feels he can get ahead with lots of BS and flattery --except the guy is a crook! You have to admit, Eddie had met his match.

The foreman is actually stealing and selling ice cream on the side, and setting Eddie up to take a big fall. Pretty good stuff from series writer Dick Conway, who has both Eddie and Wally learn a hard lesson about human nature at its worst. Hugh Beaumont hit all the right notes here.

Howard Caine, a very popular tv actor and master of dialects, is perfect for this role. Don Haggerty plays Mr. Worden, who frequently appeared on BONANZA.

PS: Look for the ice cream in the refrigerator!

And yes, I agree. When all is said and done, Eddie finally admits he was stupid. A series first!

SEASON 6 EPISODE 6 remastered/Universal.

Always a memorable episode
vitoscotti15 August 2021
Ice cream stored in an outdoor dock not at freezing temperatures. Then, ice cream put in a trunk to melt. A good episode past the logic holes. Hogan's Heroes' Howard Caine plays another rat. Eddie livens up yet another episode.

Payback Delivered Cold
sambase-387739 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Throughout the series we hear Wally, who is normally a very peaceful boy, threaten his friend Eddie with a punch in the face. Eddie always backs down and Wally doesn't have to punch him. But this is an episode where Wally assaults Eddie with a quart of ice cream. He dumps the ice cream on Eddie's head on Eddie's front porch. It's bad enough to get ice cream dumped on your head but to have it done on your own front porch is especially humiliating. (Haha!) Eddie got off easy, because as we all know Wally could have beaten up Eddie very easily and probably would have ended up with Eddie in the hospital. After the ice cream attack all Eddie had to do was take a shower.

That's how the episode ends. It starts with the two young men getting jobs at a dairy company and involving ice cream. Naturally, Eddie does a lot of stupid things and Wally ends up holding the bag. So wally decides to get payback. Very cold payback. This is a fun episode.

Eddie Gets Duped
john-20241 April 2024
I've seen this episode a number of times before starting from the original broadcast in 1962, and I'm watching it again right now on FETV. Eddie Haskell figures prominently in this episode, so you know right from the start something is going to go wrong and someone is going to get sucked into something that's actually Eddie's fault. In this episode Ward's helps Wally and Eddie get a job at his friend's dairy loading milk trucks that made home deliveries. What I like about this episode is that is involves a very serious predicament for Wally and Eddie rather than a petty problem at school or in the neighborhood. If nothing else, it's worth watching just to see Eddie doing what he does best.
