Lumpy the dope

Not a good call to let Lumpyy drive the Cleaver's car. He's made out to look mentality challenged here. Very good Fred, Eddie, and Lumpy scenes in a top episode.

Ward 2; Wally and Beaver, 0
pensman8 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Beaver is going to Wally's track meet, and Lumpy will be driving. The school is paying Lumpy ten cents a mile so Lumpy is hoping for a profit. Ward's not happy about Lumpy driving as Lumpy's car is a mess. Turns out he doesn't have to worry, Lumpy's car has broken down but Lumpy has an idea: drive Ward's car.

Fred, of course, thinks it's a great idea. Ward reluctantly agrees but on the condition there will be no other passengers. But Lumpy has to pick up Eddie. At least they make it to the meet but on the way home Lumpy decides to take a shortcut. Lumpy of course damages the motor by driving through a huge puddle and the car stalls out. Now, Houston, we have a real problem(s): An extra passenger, and driving on a road we were told to stay away from, and a car that's not running.

Eddie and Lumpy have an idea: let's take the carburetor apart. Uh, oh, there go a few parts. It's a nice mess you got us into Wally. Eddie figures. Maybe we should try pushing the car to the highway. Wait? They got home. How did that happen? There's something wrong. Even Beaver is taking a bath without being asked. What's really wrong with this picture? Wally once again reverted back to follower rather than leader. The Cleaver boys really need to learn how to say no to their "friends."

Next day one of Ward's co-workers asks if everything is OK. He was on the bus coming back from the airport and saw the boys pushing the car. Ward goes up to the boys' bedroom and asks if they have recovered from pushing the car? And he is disappointed in Wally, he could have put his brother in danger by taking that short cut. The jig is up. What little Ward doesn't know comes spilling out. Ward is rightfully upset; he allowed Wally to borrow the car and Wally didn't listen.

The boys are apologetic, but how did Ward find out? Ward just gives them an enigmatic look and reminds them fathers have a way of finding out. If nothing else, both boys are going to be a lot more careful in obeying their parents.

As Wally and Beaver try to dissect what happened, Beaver heads to the bathroom to brush his teeth. I thought you told mom you brushed, asks Wally. Beaver shrugs. He just ran the brush under water so it was wet, but given the recent turn of events he figures he'd better brush for real.

RULE NUMBER ONE; DO NOT LET LUMPY DRIVE!
tcchelsey18 February 2024
Wally and the gang have to attend an out of town track meet, and since he doesn't have his license yet --why not let "experienced" Lumpy drive?

Amazingly! Ward agrees to let Lump drive... and y'all know something is going to go wrong. More over, Eddie joins the ride and the guys take a short cut and get STUCK.

Actually, this is one story where everybody works together --- and it probably would have been a smoother ending -- if there wasn't a witness?

Just who can that be? This story is rather similar to the "flat tire" episode, if you recall, and there will be another episode in Season 6 where Lumpy acidentally bumps into Ward's new car. Stay tuned.

Pretty good story, with lots of memories of borrowing your own dad's car, hopefully with a better outcome than these goofy guys. Another Dick Conway classic, naturally including Lumpy and Eddie. Conway was a master at bringing out their characters.

Looks to have been filmed in the High Desert, a remote area, perhaps Lancaster, CA. It was also refreshing when the cast went on the road, such as this case, a good change of scenery, other than the classroom or Beave and Wally's bedroom.

Unfortunately, there's always a hitch.

From SEASON 5 EPISODE 26.

Classic car caper!

If the story conveys anything, it's how kids will say fib after fib to stay out of trouble. Even good kids like Wally and Beaver aren't above telling a few little white lies to keep from getting clobbered. It's just part of childhood and growing up. It happens so often in Leave It to Beaver episodes because that's really how real kids are. The writers always do a great job of making the plots realistic and entertaining. One can watch these shows over and over and never get bored with them.

The actors have perfected their roles so much that you know you can always rely on seeing a thoroughly enjoyable episode.

Too much Lying by beaver
LukeCoolHand6 October 2023
I am really getting tired of Beaver's lying on 90% of the episodes . It was funny the first few times but wore thin fast. I love the Andy Griffith show and can watch the episodes over and over again but not Leave it to Beaver. I think the difference is the Andy Grifith show allowed the cast to sit with the writers and put in their input. One time the writers on The Andy Griffith show wanted Don Knotts say his funny line about Nip It Nip it in the bud in more episodes and Knotts told them it was funny only if used very Sparingly - He was dead right, the writers took his advice. That type of thing didn't happen on LITB.

A Tough Decision
StrictlyConfidential3 January 2021
(*Beaver quote*) - "Hey, Wally, goofy Lumpy's here!"

"Lumpy" Rutherford's car breaks down and (believe it or not) Ward Cleaver actually gives him permission to use his car in order to drive his sons to Bellport where Wally is participating in the track meet.

On the return trip "Lumpy" takes an alternative route. And this is where all of the trouble starts.
