It's been creeping in, but disco is officially here in a big way. I like some disco music. I love Saturday Night Fever as a movie. However, I can take or leave disco as a cultural fad. Here it is, on the Pacific Princess. Everyone is going disco crazy. They're practicing their moves up on the deck. This is a double-length episode, with lots and lots of location footage aboard the real Pacific Princess. The overarching plot concerns a reunion of Haley High, Julie's old school. There's a lot going on here. Kim Darby is here. What's her's deal? Darby is delightful. I loved her as the mom in Better Off Dead. She's sexy here. Michael Lembeck is a disco teacher, married to Lisa Hartman. (The funny thing about Michael is that he looks like his dad, only he got the more handsome build. We'll see his sister at some point too. SS) Hartman's not feeling well. (I wonder what could be wrong?) Betsy is an old friend of Julie who's put on the pounds. She's the phys-ed teacher going to teach Doc. He can't exactly hide his disappointment at her size. Christopher George and Bob Denver are old friends reunited. George is a star actor. Mike Kelly is a wounded veteran, and the sight of him disappoints his friends, one of whom is a draft dodger. Raymond Burr is an alcoholic English teacher. He's a Falstaffian character. He sings Glbert and Sullivan with Captain Stubing. I miss the days when teachers were tyrants. 'I was young until I had you as a teacher,' he says to Chris George. He's fond of Julie though. You have to admire the efficiency of a Love Boat script. All of that is packed into the first 15 minutes! In the disco dancing scene, when Lembeck dances with Julie, we get what sounds like a licensed song with vocals. That's unusual for the show. Meanwhile Isaac dances with a Nubian queen. There' an alternate universe where Saturday Night Fever starred Michael Lembeck and John Travolta appeared on The Love Boat. Later, when Lisa Hartman dresses sexy to get Lembeck back, she's brought into frame with a moaning saxophone.
