***SPOILERS*** It's after ex-con Eddie Heart was crushed to death by an exploded bank vault door that Chicago Police Let Det. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin,started to suspect that his grieving young widow Penny, Connie Hines, knows a lot more about her late husband's life of crime and those he assorted with that she was leading him on to.In fact Penny was under 24 hour around the clock surveillance not by the Chicago PD but by Eddie's bank robbing associates Charles Logan & Otto Penic,John Goddard & Robert Armstrong, who were shacked up next door to her and watching her every movement.
It's when Penny decided not to go along with Logan & Otto by providing them cover, by keeping her mouth shut to the police, on their next bank job that they, or at least Logan, started playing rough & tough with her. Knocking Pennie out and after tying her up and wrapping her in a blanked she was left hanging out the window as the two went to knock off the Federal Reserve Bank in the Chicago's business district! It's Let. Ballinger who smelled a rat in Penny's story that she has no idea who her husband's friends or fellow bank robbers are and checked out all the clues, like Eddie's cell-mates in the state pen, in Eddie's life in and out of prison. Let. Ballinger soon realizing that it's both Logan & Otto who were not only at the scene of the bank robbery, that went bust, where Eddie ended up dying but did nothing to help him, like call for an ambulance, when he was still alive and breathing!
***SPOILERS*** Setting off all the bank alarms in the business district the two bank robbers thought that they fooled the police long enough for them to knock off the Federal Reserve Bank and have time to make their getaway before their spotted. The mistake that they made is that the alarm cables run through the Chicago sewer system and with Let. Ballinger knowing that he and his fellow cops have a big surprise withing for them. Ballinger was also able to find out from Otto Penick, the good guy of the two, where Penny was and had a squad of police and an ambulance get their just in time before her luck as well as air ran out!
