Blackmail gone Wrong?

Warning: Spoilers
M-SQUAD –Dolly's Bar -1958 This is episode 20 of the 1957 to 1960 Crime series, M-SQUAD. The series ran for 117 episodes and features Lee Marvin as the headliner. Marvin is a Lt with the elite M-Squad unit of the Chicago Police.

This one starts with pretty showgirl Janis Rule entering her apartment flat. Inside she finds a stiff, not just any stiff but the gossip writer for a "Confidential" type rag. And it so happens that the swine had been trying to blackmail Rule. He wanted Rule to step out with him by she refused. Rule grabs the phone and calls M-Squad Detective Lt, Lee Marvin. The two had been an item several years before.

This one throws a few curves at that the viewer as Marvin follows the leads. Included in the plot are Claire Carleton as a Burlesque bar owner, Fredd Wayne as a gangster-gunman and Joe Flynn as a safe-cracker who works for the Police. Is it a murder, or is it a suicide?

Not a great episode by any means, but it still supplies enough to keep one watching. (b/w)

Killing A Very Disliked Man
ccthemovieman-123 March 2010
A elderly male gossip columnist is shot and killed in an apartment in which we find an old "friend" of "Ballinger," a hot babe called "Kathy" (played by the mid-20s film actress Janice Rule!). She's an actress in this role and she was afraid of this writer's nastiness and thought more might come of it, so she had a bought a gun. Unfortunately, that's the gun that killed the guy. Naturallly, she says she's innocent and since she's nice-looking, even though she does all the guilty things, he believes her. That's "Frank."

"Dolly" is a middle-aged hard-looking woman (Claire Carleton) who has been through a lot, you can see in her face and hear it in her voice and what she says. She, and about half of Chicago, it seems, had secrets that this gossip-monger knew and held secret in a safe at Dolly's Bar. Thus, the suspects were many. Nobody liked the guy who was killed.

Most of the "action" takes place in one room in this episode, which makes it kind of talky after awhile. It isn't one of the more fascinating episodes because too long is spent in one place: Dolly's room, which opens into a big one-way mirror to the floor show. It's a little bizarre, but wears thin after a short time.

The idea is for Frank to prove another woman innocent. He likes to do that sort of thing.
