***SPOILERS***Let. Det. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin, uses his manly charm to win the confidence of cold blooded murderess Pilar Olivers, Carole Mathews, to get to the bottom of a number murders that point to a multi million illegal fur smugging operation. It's when a package of valuable unborn, or fetus, seal skins was stolen from big time fur dealer R. Franklyn Matson the 3rd, Ralph Clampton, that Pilar in a fit of rage blasted him holding Matson the 3rd, in being an incompetent fool, responsible for the loss.

It was kindly old morgue worker and former biology professor and fur expert John Hibbins,Tim Graham, who spotted the missing fur as he was getting ready to prepare one of his stiffs or dead bodies a Sailor Grim, Micheal Carr, for burial. It was Grim who was gunned down when he refused to hand over the fur to the person who was about to pay him, under the table, a scant $100.00 for it when it was worth millions! He was also trying to stiff both Pilar & Matson III whom he worked for and who must have even offered less for it!

Ballinger checking out a piece of fur found clutched in Grim's hand soon realized how valuable it was from talking to Hibbins and when he tried to contact fur dealer Matson the 3rd he was shocked to find him shot to death in his study! It was Matson the 3rd's partner as well as murderer Pilar who started to get a bit cozy with Ballinger who was undercover as a fur dealer. That in her thinking that he knew where the valuable seal fur was which in fact he didn't. It was when she found out that Hibbins was in fact the person who had the fur she planned to pay him a visit and, by murdering him, taking it off his hands. Which was exactly what Let. Det. Ballinger expected her to do and was there, hiding in the apartment, ready to put the pinch, not on her behind, on her!

***SPOILERS*** It was Hobbins plan to sell the fur and use the money to help his crippled wheelchair ridden daughter Doris,Patricia Michon, get the expensive medical and physical treatment so she could walk again. In light in what happened it won't surprise me that Doris got that treatment with the rightful owners of the fur picking up the tab. That in having her dad. Prof Hibbins without realizing it leading the police in the person of Let. Det. Ballinger straight to it!
