M-SQUAD – Neighborhood Killer -1957

This is the third episode of the 1957 to 1960 Crime series, M-SQUAD. The series ran for 117 episodes and features Lee Marvin as the headliner. Marvin is a Lt with the elite M-Squad unit of the Chicago Police.

A night beat cop, Don Kennedy, finds broken glass at the front of a pawn shop. He heads for the handy Police call box and reports the incident. Just as he hangs up, several gunshots split the night time quiet and Kennedy goes down in a heap.

Police Lt Lee Marvin draws the case. With no leads, the police are somewhat at a loss where to start. They go through Kennedy's files to see if anyone he arrested, could be looking for some payback. This is of course rather time consuming, but it does turn up a few possibilities that need to be checked.

Then a local kid is caught trying to sell a bag full of watches that been stolen from the pawnshop. A few minutes of 3rd degree soon convinces Marvin that the lad might have stolen the watches, but is innocent of shooting the cop. It is back to the leads from Kennedy's files.

Several days of hunting down people and numerous interviews are needed before a clue pops up. The brother, Grant Richards, of a man that Kennedy had arrested, killed Kennedy in revenge. When Marvin calls him on the matter, guns are pulled and an exchange of gunfire needed before Richards is arrested.

Also in the cast is, Robert Patten, Vicki Raaf, Stafford Repp and Paul Newlan. (b/w)

Much Of A Cop's Life Can Be Legwork
ccthemovieman-118 January 2010
A cop is shot to death outside a pawn shop. Who did it? That's the storyline. Crimes like these were much tougher to solve in the 1950s when there were no such things as video and surveillance cameras around. There was no DNA evidence. You hoped you could get some fingerprints somewhere and maybe a witness who saw something.

Basically, that's this whole episode except for the last 30 seconds. It's just the behind-the-scenes legwork of Ballinger as he tries to find out who killed the cop. He interviews a handful of people and you know one of them is responsible, but which one?

This episode, frankly, was boring. There is no other way to put it but it does illustrate all the tedious work a cop has to go through behind the scenes to solve crimes. Only Marvin's distinctive voice kept me awake as he slowly figures this case out.
