Maigret swimming in treacherous political waters
Tony-Holmes1 October 2022
In this episode, next to last of the 12 Gambon Maigret shows, he has to negotiate the murky world of political skullduggery, asked by a Minister, and indeed the President, to find out why a report has gone missing, one that could seriously embarrass the Govt.

Who is telling the truth, an ambitious politician, trying to climb the greasy pole, or the established Minister, famous for being honourable. Or neither?

Maigret discovers he's being observed by Govt agents, who may or may not obstruct what he's doing, and at times has to conceal his actions.

This episode had been done in the Rupert Davies series of Maigrets (60s), and had a slightly different ending, though it told broadly the same tale, and had a slightly less run time (about 15 mins less).

As ever with these Gambon shows, the support cast is excellent, Barbara Flynn as Madame Maigret (slightly more spirited than previous actresses played her, or were allowed to), Peter Barkworth, Jon Finch, and Michael Melia amongst them. John Moffatt is the snooty Comeliau, the examining magistrate keen to preserve order - and his own job.

I only gave this show 7, as the tension isn't as great, there was no murder at the central point of the story, but the story and cast were good.

Stick with it

The plot is complicated, but stick with it. Work out who Calame, Nicou and Piquemal are. It concerns a political scandal and this dramatised version is, I think, better than the book. Peter Barkworth is great as the minister, as is Sorcha Cusack as his secretary.

Not long enough.

Maigret and the Minister

What is the consequences for refusing a handshake? For the government minister of public works (Peter Barkworth) a career ending one.

After the collapse of a sanatorium built disadvantaged children, resulting in the deaths of 62 kids. The minister was handed a report where concerns were raised about the construction of the building.

The report has been stolen and Maigret has been brought in an unofficial capacity to look into the break in. He even gets a phone call from the President of France.

Maigret is not keen on politicians. They have an hidden agenda and they do not like to tell the truth.

The secret service is also involved. A tubthumping politician Charles Mascoulin (Jon Finch) is gaining political mileage from the scandal.

This is a well acted piece with actors such as Barkworth and Finch. Everyone has upped their game.

The story might get convoluted and is a little dry but Maigret suspects an inside job. A hunch worth persevering with.
