Shades of "Laura"
planktonrules17 April 2017
The first portion of this episode is confusing...lots of folks get murdered and in a couple cases, Mannix is there when the killings occur. However, one of them bothers him most--of a pretty lady photographer. He broods about thinking about it for some time...much like Dana Andrews did in the movie "Laura". And, like "Laura", it turns out the woman is NOT dead and some other woman was accidentally killed instead of her. So what do the murders of all these folks have to do with the photographer? See the show and you'll figure it all out.

This is the first episode with romance in many seasons. However, like most romances on detective shows, following the episode you never hear about this woman again! Well worth seeing.

A tale with some twists and turns and high body count
Guad421 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A hotel tycoon is killed, supposedly when he interrupted a robbery, but Joe takes a call from old friend Roy (Bing Russell) who says it was a hit. He offers to split the reward for the killer with Joe as Joe will act as front man with Roy providing the information. Then Roy is shot and killed in a rather unusual way. After that, Joe gets a call from famous photographer Carol Britton (Rosemary Forsyth) who offers him the same deal. He goes to Carol's house and get jumped and knocked out (That's a surprise!!) Joe did see a woman's body on the bed before getting hit. Joe sees Carol's boss and another office associate. He learns everyone loves Carol and that another office mate was killed in a hit and run a few weeks prior. Joe talks with Art who doesn't see a connection. (Another surprise!) Joe talks to a witness of the hit and run. The witness wonders if the headlights were on so it could have been a deliberate rundown. The witness, under duress, calls Joe and sets him up by giving him an address that has a phone that the bad guys wired with TNT. A unique way to get Joe but he, somewhat magically, figures it out and leaps through a window just as the bomb goes off. Joe sees the witness and learns he was threatened so Joe lets it slide. Why do bad guys always go through elaborate ways to get Joe? Just walk up and shoot him!

Joe learns the hotel rich guy had a partner (Jay Robinson) who is in a low security jail. He tells Joe the hotel chain is in league with the syndicate. Then Carol Britton appears! Carol was on vacation and says the widow of the hit and run victim was staying at her place. The widow actually called Joe. Seems the widow was separated from her husband and Roy was her boyfriend.

Carol reports she was at the hotel when the tycoon is killed and got some photos as the body was put in the ambulance. Carol and Joe hang out on the beach as they work together to get to the bottom of it. Very romantic. They set a trap by hanging out together so presenting the bad guys a two-for-one target that is too tempting to pass up. Plus Joe gets to date Carol! The bad guys grab the two at Carol's place. Turns out Carol's photos show Jay Robinson was at the scene of the crime and not in lockdown. The hit and run victim saw it in the darkroom as he developed the prints, He tried to blackmail Jay and got run over for the effort but not before telling others (his wife who told Roy) so they had to be killed too. Not surprised that Jay Robinson is the bad guy because he is always a slimy bad guy. Joe takes out Jay and his one henchman and the case is over.

Cast is good but not sure Rosemary Forsyth is that unforgettable. She is a beautiful woman but isn't quite right as an enchantress. Doesn't come across as a globe trotting photog. Not sure who I would have picked instead that would have been available back then. Linda Evans? Stephanie Powers? Maybe a British or French actress. I guess an enchantress is in the eye of the enchanted.

Don't think Joe got paid for this one. A decent episode with a slightly disappointing, routine ending. For being so smitten, Joe gets over Carol by the next episode and we never see her again.

An average episode, with the movie Laura blending through.
barnettjoshua-7053122 May 2024
This episode, which first of all, I thought was decently average does have similarities to the movie Laura, starring Dana Andrews.

Now a couple of years ago, I covered a similar story for Laura in one of my books, I keep for myself to read and I have actually watched the actual movie itself and the plot and story really seem as if the writers in this episode sort of copied it, but just did it in their style

Anyway, this episode begins with a murder already transpiring and an old friend named Ray Jordan phoning Mannix to come join him on his boat, so at Jordan's request, Mannix does and while on his boat, Jordan mentions that he knows who the killer is and is willing to pay Mannix, but before they get to business, the same killer makes his way while driving his boat and shoots Jordan and ends up sailing off before Mannix can get a good look at him!

Anyway, the rest is for you to see and watch and judge for yourself on whether this episode is good or not, I think this episode is okay, average, not all that bad!

JOE HAS IT REALLY, REALLY BAD.
tcchelsey25 November 2022
I totally agree with the last reviewer. This episode definitely has shades of LAURA. However... it was written by Don Mullaly, who specialized more in adventure films and westerns. He began his career writing for cop shows like RICHARD DIAMOND.

More of a sentimental drama that finds Mannix trying to solve the case of a murdered photographer. Photos of lovely Rosemary Forsyth (Carol) begin playing tricks with his imagination, and that's not a good sign. Her apartment door swings open and the very real and ALIVE Carol appears?

Now to put the puzzle together, mixed with a little romance. And does all this affect Peggy, just a bit?

The last reviewer added; Forsyth may have been the wrong actress cast in the role. Well, let's face it. Could anyone have topped Gene Tierney from the original mystery? You may remember, back in the 70s there was a nostalgia craze going on, and NO cable... Accordingly, all us folks saw black and white classics, around the clock. The tv writers had to have gotten at least a few ideas from these oldies, but you can never ever match the original cast.

Still interesting cop show slash/ soap opera and Joe is really stuck on this mysterious lady. Super villain (with the beedy eyes) Jay Robinson co-stars as Lyle. Watch him. Robinson had the bad guy look for years, and actually was supported by Bette Davis when his career took a downturn after being arrested for drugs in the 50s. Bing Russell, plays Ray, who hires Joe just before he is killed. Russell was a popular character actor, and inspired his famous son, Kurt. Bing looked a bit like Carl Betz, at certain angles.

Also catch some beautiful southern California beach scenes (Marina del Rey)... for all us armchair vacationers.

Directed by veteran Harry Harvey, Jr, long associated with the series. Harvey was a walking encyclopedia of the show, having also worked as script supervisor from the very beginning. He oversaw mostly every single episode over eight seasons. SEASON 8 EPISODE 9 CBS/Paramount remastered color dvd box set. Released 2012.

Boring
zombiemockingbird9 July 2023
This episode was just annoying. My biggest complaint was the constant adulation slathered all over Carol Britton (Rosemary Forsyth). Joe spent the first half of the episode talking about her and mooning over her, which got pretty sickening after a while. And when he actually met her, he acted like a love-struck teenager. Everyone kept saying she was young and beautiful. No offense to Rosemary but she's pretty average looking, and not a great actress either. I had her pegged to be at least 40; I was surprised to find she was only 31, which made it even worse, because Mannix was old enough to be her Father. They really miscast this part. Sorry for the rant; the "romance" was just embarrassing, and completely overshadowed the actual story which was pretty boring.

That's the end?
DAshton19182 September 2020
Weird ep as Season 8 draws to a close. A tycoon is shot...then so is an informer and a lovely photog who served in Vietnam...Mannix falls for her so sets out to find out what's going on.

Confusing in the beginning with an ending so abrupt I had to rewatch it to figure out WTH just happened. Take a point off for the old "Mannix gets knocked out" cliche and it lands at a three for me. Hope there's better to come.

Hated seeing Mannix like this
glitterrose1 March 2022
First off, thought it was a dull episode/mystery. Thing that bugged me the most involves some head cannon I'd been coming up with. I like thinking of that red phone that sits behind him as being his personal line and enough steamy things are said to make your face turn red. I guess that phone's gone. I guess all of his lovers that's been writing him racy letters (check episodes that have Mannix sniffing the mail and smiling) have either been dumped or they just decided Mannix was NEVER gonna really get serious about them. He certainly hasn't been touching many women's faces or hair lately. I guess his actions pretty much dried up for why he'd get so hung up on this basic woman in this episode. Straight up basic.

Shame you didn't have Peggy have her claws come out seeing how much Joe was into this chick. Or perhaps not. Maybe Peggy already knows she's won the war. This basic chick is never seen again. She gets to see his sexy self every working day. ;)

My apologies. I love coming up with stuff like this is the episode's on the slow side.
